Japan recorded a temperature of 40 C for the first time this year on Sunday, with the mercury hitting the scorching level in central Japan as a heatwave continues to engulf the nation, according to the weather agency.
With a high-pressure system hovering over wide areas, Shizuoka reported 40.0 C at 1:18 p.m., and temperatures had risen to 35 C or above at 244 locations, the most so far this year, among the Japan Meteorological Agency's 914 observation points nationwide.
Shimonita, Gunma Prefecture, logged 39.8 C, followed by 39.3 C in Kofu, 39.2 C in Otsuki and 39.0 in Koshu, all three in Yamanashi Prefecture.
The temperatures in Shizuoka, Shimonita and Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, were record highs for the locations. The temperature in central Tokyo, meanwhile, stood at 34.4 C.
The severe heat is expected to continue on Monday. The agency has issued an alert against heat exhaustion for much of the archipelago, urging people not to go outside during the day as much as possible and use air conditioning when inside.

For those out there who will be commuting in this heat, dress down as much as you can and pay no attention to the piercing judgmental looks others will give you for it. From experience, I will commute with just a t-shirt on and just change once I arrive at the office. Also, avoid that hot tea in the afternoon and other caffeine-laced drinks, those make you feel hotter.

Mid summer and it 35c ? Sounds normal and even up to 40c is normal. So why the hype. There is nothing more worse when you knowing the weather is stressing you and some idiots starts a conversation about it being abnormal hot when you know it’s just a normal summer day but it is stress you. You keep saying to yourself nah it just a normal summers day, and some self centered idiots start extravagantly declaring we having a heatwave. I would like to give this self-centred idiot and extravagant clip to the back of its head.

It’s well bleeding hotter if you live like me in the middle of the city, make no mistake.
Go out me door and ruddy hell, feel like. I’m walking into an oven. Everywhere is concrete with no shade and glass reflecting all the heat. It’s beastly I tell you. Well, luckily I work my own hours because I shun the beastly rat race, bu it’s still too hot for me at 6pm, 6pm! Can you believe it?
Well, the forecastle is for lower temperatures later to week, hope it’s right, need some relief it’s really getting on my wick at the moment.

Many people in Japan just turn on AC, especially with high electricity bill today.

I reckon its got hotter over the years I been here.
And I live on the coast.
Cant imagine what Tokyo is like in mid summer.

For sure. And this summer will just plain suck

Summer or not, every single weekend I escape from Tokyo, unless there is a really interesting event/concert.
Yesterday I was sitting on one of the multiple outdoor sofas available under a very big tree, sipping on my Dr Pepper while enjoying the beautiful lavender and sunflower gardens, gazing at the beautiful mountains and cities from 1300m height, guess 26º was the peak.
It's actually mind-boggling people wait for the weekend to come all the way from other cities to "enjoy" the mix of heart warming alsphalt and crazy crowds in Tokyo.

Why is everyone still working in July?
Don't you get summer holidays?

I still remember when I used to sit in front of the tv to watch talking heads reporting on "rain" "hot weather" "snow" for 20, 30 minutes. They could report about the blueness of the sky every now and then.
People would still watch.

And it's going to cool off again from tomorrow. But best to panic, just in case.

19.5°C in my 3LDK with 2 ACs and 2 fans roaring 24/7 until at least Halloween. Come over if you've some beer and sushi!

I love reading the inevitable of posts on these threads telling us how they’ve got the Air conditioning blasting.
I can imagine these people share pictures of their lunches on Instagram.

I pass on the beer. But would love the sushi especially if you have mayo salmon.
The only thing that actually bothers me during mid summer time is that its almost impossible to eat a good revolving sushi for lunch or dinner on weekends. Last night I tried reserving from the app of the 3 big revolving sushi chains and every shop had a queue of around 50 people so we ended up picking up some sushi from Summit supermarket

I come from a cold place, so I love cool temperatures. Now I live in the hot south of Japan and my air conditioning is set to 27 C. Only in the room I'm in at any one time. It's totally okay. I don't understand people who leave the air conditioning running when they're not even at home and then wonder why it costs so much. The same with the cars. Leaving the engine and air conditioning running even though nobody is in the car. What nonsense.

Follow the money......
1-2 kWh x 24 =24-48 kWh/day, 115 days till Halloween. 2,760-5,520 Kwh x ¥30/kWh =¥82,800 to ¥165,600. For four months. ¥20,000 - ¥41,000 per month.
My summertime electricity bill for our 6LDK is ¥11,000.

Annnnd???..
That's what AC is used for, genius...

You can install smart switches to be able to turn on/off the AC units from a smartphone. Turn it on when you leave your workplace.

Ok your in Tokyo and single and been hot all day and there is the normal change that happen every night that when the harbour surface temp lower and the hot city draws the cooler air from the water that can been from sun down and rarely after midnight. But mostly from 22:00. So to escape the heat of the evening fork out 2000 yen for a standing room only ticket at Tokyo Dome which is aircon and entertainment for the evening. That is the best I can suggest.

For a very old man you're quite sharp with numbers.
I'm not young either but only after hitting my 30s is when I learned there is no price for the most important and limited currency of all: Lifetime.
You should prioritize your limited 24h and live comfortably everyday as if there is no tomorrow.
Things like saving on electricity and being uncomfortable, wearing worn out clothes at home or choosing a car mostly based on fuel efficiency are things from the past for me.

Spot on. You can actually be eco friendly and super minimalist without suffering to save a few yen.
Today's evening will never come back.
It's like that rare sauce/souvenir you're really curious about and only exists in that particular spot far away from home but you decide not to buy it to save your ¥3000. Some things will never come back.

finally rich and DoubleCracker post your accommodation sizes and monthly power bill for August for comparison.

Our local seaside temperature is 5-10ºC lower than Osaka/Tokyo. We are not surrounded by concrete and high-rise buildings reflecting heat. Most days there is a sea breeze to help keep cool.
tigerjane
Here is a tip believe it or not it is cheaper to keep your air conditioner on at all times and never shut it off. A couple years ago I left mine on, never turning it off for the whole month of July and got a shock my bill was only 10, 000 yen, and from that time on I do not turn off my air conditioner during the summer.
tigerjane
PS, another suggestion get a ceiling fan and put it up near the air conditioner and it will circulate the air throughout the house.
wallace

Must be one small AC unit.
Why leave it on when out at work, shopping, or out when entertaining?
/dev/random
That very much depends on how much of your day you spend at home.
An AC unit uses about two to three times as much power in the first 15 to 30 minutes after turning on. If you keep shutting it on and off several times during the day while you are at home, then yes, it is better to just leave it on. If you leave home for work for half the day, however, turning it off while you're not home can save energy and money.
A power meter is, naturally, helpful to see the power consumption behaviour of your AC. Cheap power meters are generally "good enough" to make a general assessment (they are a bit inaccurate/useless with appliances that use very little power, but that decidedly doesn't include ACs).
Mr Kipling
A Japanese TV show debunked this as nonsense last.
They said to set it at 28 and with the dehumidifier function on as the best comfort/ cost setting. This is exactly what I have been doing. Mrs Kipling however, likes freezer settings.
N. Knight
There's lot of different factors on AC and how efficient it will be in various houses.
I have over 300 sqm, 200 sqm of that is open plan with 6 meter ceilings.
Have 7 AC units throughout, big ones too, all 200v which is more efficient. Don't need to run them all at the same time. Night time don't need any at all. House stays cool after dark.
My electric bill has never hit ¥40,000 per month although has come pretty close in August withing a couple hundred yen.
¥40,000 is fine for me to keep cool, but Spring & Autumn I'm down around ¥10,000 or often less.
But planning on modifications to the house to increase cooling efficiency, so that should bring the cost down dramatically.
I'm pretty much all electric. My gas bill rarely hits more than ¥3,000 per month.
Summer is definitely hotter than it used to be. My house was built with no AC, it wasn't needed back then. We are at 800 meters and in forest and it hit 33⁰ today. Our neighbours still don't have AC and they are now considering it. Family has owned their house for 60+ years so they can see the temperature trend.
wallace
This month I am running the AC on the dehumidifier setting which cools but only uses half of the power. 1,000 watts on cooling. 500 watts on dehumidifier. Next month will need the cooling setting.

It’s only going to get worse and worse. OlI like these mist things but they should be installed on outdoor platforms along with ceiling fans. I’ve only seen them at selected bus stops often in front of government offices. I can’t believe not one Japanese employee has thought about comfort of their passengers. Was at Marunochi line yesterday at Yotsuya. It was amazingly horrible. No wind at all. No ceiling fans installed to circulate air at all. What has happened to Japanese common sense.
Ah_so
It's not like no one else has air conditioning. Everyone has it on. But the preceding post to yours mentioned setting it to 19.5C (not that I believe this number, given most find this to be uncomfortably cold and the shock stepping outside is even worse ).
While there are various motives for people telling us they've got the aircon on, I think the likely ones are:
self-absorption and the belief that others care.
boastfulness, in setting the temperature exceedingly low and showing that they don't care about the money.
power over nature - that they are immune to what nature can do, or what mankind has done to nature.
mockery - a huge middle finger to those who care about climate change - but only do they not care, safe in their hyper-chilled apartment, but they are are making things even worse. LOL.I will put the aircon on out of necessity, but I'm fine with 27C or 28C - it's summer.
SDCA
wallace, that's amazing. I need to learn how to keep my electricity bills low like you. I'll try the aircon method mentioned above with using a smart switch. I am also guilty of leaving it on because I saw the bills weren't all that crazy and since I am working from home most of the time and also need to keep my aquarium cool. Need to start penny pinching as much as possible though because other prices have gone up and I need to save as much as possible for retirement (they just announced on the news today that in 30 years our generation will be falling short of 180,000 annually in receivable pensions). Thanks LDP...

Tepco issues warning calling for efficient electricity use
N. Knight
200v units much more energy efficient than 100v. There's also many other simple things that can be done to a house to mitigate energy consumption in the height of summer.
Ah_so
I agree that mockery is the key one, I think it is a combination of all of them, but mainly the latter 3 points.
Climate change denial, and the rejection of science, has become a political mark of faith for many on the right. But not just denying it, because when it obviously is happening, they have the personal means (rather than societal means) to tackle how it effects them personally. They are all right, and that is all that matters, not people poorer than them, and not future generations that will curse our selfishness.
And to show they don't care, they will make it extra cold and wear a sweater, just to own the Libs.
Ah_so
35C is normal, but hot.
40C is rare, but much more common than it ever used to be. It is not hype to talk about such extreme temperatures.
