Missing woman rescued near Tokyo after 36 hours adrift at sea

She was swimming at Shirahama Ohama beach in Shizuoka Prefecture at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday

 drifting some 80 kilometers over about 36 hours,

True survivor!

Here, Swimming a 7.30pm , no life guards on duty, on a floaty ring. Found 36 hours later.

She should buy a lottery ticket....and she didnt think to call out as she was drifting AWAY from the beach. ?

She was saved by the grace of God.

I've seen this happen in Shimoda.

A person gets on one of those unicorn floaties, gets adrift because it's a normal thing for things floating. But can't get into the water to kick it back into course, or abandon it before getting into the deeper area because, they never learned how to swim before into one of those.

She was very lucky. The very small swim ring usually can't be found in the very wide sea. Sailor(s) must have good watch.

Garthegoyle....yeah the "floaties "....get off the train, buy a floaty from a shop,....then leave it at the beach at days end.

At least this floaty had some utility.

I'd use the woman to promote the brand of floaty she had.

From Shizuoka to Tokyo on a ukiwa. That will be one heck of a story to tell the people back home.

Saved by warm seas. A lucky woman.

I heard from TV news yesterday. The sea water is 20 - 24 Celsius. It seems not warm for many hours there.

I guess Chinese tourists really will go everywhere.

Let this be a lesson to us all: when using a swim ring, always carry an outboard motor, just in case.

Feel good story here, victim and rescuers are all heroes. All of a sudden I feel warm and fuzzy about humanity again.

Wow that's a significant journey lucky the shark population is essentially non existent!

Probably fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the ocean!

She was extremely tenacious to last 36 hours clinging to a float.

Congratulations, legally she actually became the captain of her floating unicorn or whatever it was. Extremely lucky to have been spotted and rescued alive. I don't understand how people underestimate the sea like this - it's not a place for doing stupid things..

Great outcome, this young woman is very lucky! Hats off to the Japan Coast Guard.

By law, all these "floaties" must have a label stating that they are "not lifesaving devices". I guess, occasionally, they can be!

Would be a very scary ordeal.

My close friend attempted to swim from Akashi to Awaji, in Hyogo. The channel is extremely busy with ships and boats, and there are also very strong currents, which ultimately swept him away to Okayama 9 hours later.

Thank God, the woman is very lucky to be alive, very lucky.

Her friend reported her missing. Must have been a truly scary time out on the deep ocean.
