Posted in: Japan sees 1st 40 C day this summer as heatwave persists See in context
I come from a cold place, so I love cool temperatures. Now I live in the hot south of Japan and my air conditioning is set to 27 C. Only in the room I'm in at any one time. It's totally okay. I don't understand people who leave the air conditioning running when they're not even at home and then wonder why it costs so much. The same with the cars. Leaving the engine and air conditioning running even though nobody is in the car. What nonsense.

What a joke the USA has become in so many ways over the last few decades. I'm actually pro-America, but as an outsider I can only shake my head at what's going on. Quo vadis, America?

Why doesn't anyone mention Kyushu here? You can just visit Kyushu and you've seen and experienced almost everything that is Japan. I'm not a fan of hordes of tourists, but a little more internationality would do South Kyushu, where I live, good. At the moment, it's mainly Asians who come here, but I've also met groups from France. The only thing I fear is that things will become more expensive then. Salaries here in the city are extremely low.

I am not an American, I am European. I like the international feel of Okinawa, which is also based on the Americans present. I live in southern Kyushu, there are times when I don't see any Westerner for weeks. That's why American-influenced Okinawa is a good place for me to travel to sometimes.

It's none of our business, the Japanese will decide their own fate. However, Renhō has something sinister about her. Would fit in well as an alien in "Men in Black".

The automation wave has come for graphic designers, illustrators, translators, coders.
I'm a graphic designer and I tell you, I'm lucky to be at an age where it doesn't matter to me if AI completely erases my field of work. But I feel sorry for the young people who have chosen such a career out of passion and now have to watch as AI takes over with pseudo-creativity.
I'm not necessarily against AI, but people need to realize that it will destroy much of what makes a person an individual. Welcome to monotony.

My 13-year-old Honda Hybrid isn't showing any signs of age yet, the concept is convincing. I hope for many more years. I think it's more sustainable not to change your car every few years than to follow trends. I'm not against electric cars at all, but my next and therefore last car will also be a hybrid. It is wise that the domestic carmakers are not switching completely to electric yet.

To each his own. I don't drive a tractor like that, but I find the mid-range SUVs quite interesting. It would help everyone if SUV drivers drove a little more moderately than usual. If you own such a monster, there's nothing wrong with behaving more considerately in traffic.

I am a white, older guy and have lived in Miyazaki for 10 years. I have never been checked by the Japanese police, although I don't always follow the rules exactly. I think racial profiling has to do with big city life. As one of the few western foreigners living in Miyazaki, there are no problems here, even if I were black and young.

“Destroyer” was the first record I ever bought. I saw them twice about 45 years ago when I was a teenager. It's true that they didn't sound particularly great in concert, but they put on a badass show. I rarely listen to KISS these days, but they are legendary. Much more impressive than today's music from untalented lip sync business slaves.

Posted in: South Korea to ban eating dogs See in context
I come from Europe. As a little boy, I spent my holidays on my great-grandparents' farm. When the neighbor's dog died, they cooked and ate it. A long time ago. When I tell Japanese people that we eat rabbit, they look shocked.
I think many Asians don't really care about animals. Keep dogs in cages in their 1 DKs while they go to work or chain them outside no matter the weather. Or look at agriculture in Japan: you rarely see cows outside.
I'm not saying you have to give up your eating habits or keeping animals, but at least treat them in a decent way. It's not that difficult. Sometimes you see pitiful things here.
