Nationalism is a disease
It’s certainly very dangerous.
I only bother with the 100m and 200m finals. Bolt was great.
The rest of the Olympics is generally boring.
People getting nationalistic watching sports they often aren’t really interested in or even barely understand is a bit silly..

My Father, in contortions insisted its a penalty, I just view an equal play for the ball, a block
Some arguing it would have been a free-kick if it had happened outside the box and so the decision was consistent. Refs are obviously more hesitant to give pens.
I don’t think it was a foul even if it had happened on the halfway line.
You usually need a bit of luck/decisions to go your way in tournament football. As mentioned earlier, Spain got away with a handball inside the box v Germany.
UK bookies have Spain at 8/11 and England at 6/5.

Forgive me, was Harry Kane penalty, VAR decision justifiable?
Never a pen.
Great game to watch - unusual when England are involved.
Still, they have improved a lot in this tournament. Brilliant finish from Watkins - he and Toney have played their parts in this tournament.
Koeman furious but those of us old enough to remember his foul on Platt might have limited sympathy. Crap Everton manager as well.

Posted in: UK's Starmer hopes for updates on England soccer match at NATO See in context
Why must we be subjected to these fluff-and-puff "articles" about leftist politicians? Are we dealing with journalists here -- or political operatives?
What if everything about this story were the same, except Starmer was a conservative?
If he were, the media would probably be blasting him for wanting a soccer game update during a NATO summit.
Let’s look at the UK.
In the UK, the media leans conservative - the Mail, the Express, the Sun, the Times, the Telegraph…
Just the other week, Starmer was attacked by elements of the conservative media for saying he’d try to keep Friday nights free as this is important to him and his Jewish wife.
‘Curry gate’ another febrile nothing burger the conservative media ran with to deflect attention away from Tory shenanigans under lockdown.
Who can forget the Daily Mail’s disgraceful attack on Ed Miliband’s father in the 2015 election? The man who served in WW2 while the Mail was cheering the Nazis.
Oh wait! I missed this one.
More recently, the conservative media were all over Angela Rayner perhaps owing a few thousand quid in tax while being less agitated by mass tax evasion in the millions by leading Tories.
I can go on if you like.
I’d do a little reading on the UK media.
Might help

The climate has been changing forever and yet these animals have adapted and survived since who knows when
I think it’s around 99% of all species which have ever existed are now extinct ( I haven’t read half of the books written on this ).
There’s no guarantee a species will survive.

You find those defending Trump the man are as dishonest as he is - the types making transparently ridiculous claims of flying private, running multiple companies, having multiple degrees in the sciences, winning bets that don’t exist, spamming social media with multiple accounts etc.
They must see a kindred spirit.
They are a waste of space.
There are those who vote Trump who see him as the appalling character he is but see him as better than the alternative.
The fact decent, worthwhile people see Trump as better than the alternative is something the Democrats have to carry blame for.

I don’t know what’s going to happen this November, but the U.S. deserves a more intelligent president than this criminal and his gang of cronies
He’s an appalling candidate - a track record of not delivering, clearly in mental decline, a thundering ignoramus, a pathological liar, a convicted felon and a petty and childish temperament.
Any decent candidate should be thrashing this ridiculous person.
Blame the Democrats for not having a candidate capable of thrashing him at the moment.
Could change?

Spain look dead certs to win it
They do look good. Some might say best out of a bad bunch in this tournament but I think that’s doing them a disservice- they’ve played some excellent football.
Deserve to win it.

The right and extreme right suffered significant losses in the UK and French elections
The way to keep the extremists out of power is to govern well.
The hard core of the far right are easily led, unhappy and full of fear and can probably never be swayed, but those who vote for the likes of Le Pen through exasperation can. Protest votes are fickle.
Reasonable parties need to get their acts together.

While there are various motives for people telling us they've got the aircon on, I think the likely ones are:
self-absorption and the belief that others care.
boastfulness, in setting the temperature exceedingly low and showing that they don't care about the money.
power over nature - that they are immune to what nature can do, or what mankind has done to nature.
mockery - a huge middle finger to those who care about climate change - but only do they not care, safe in their hyper-chilled apartment, but they are are making things even worse. LOL.
Very interesting and well put.
I’d say the mockery one is the one I most often come across.
Sounds like the unpopular teenagers and stunted adults you come across spamming social media.

Indeed, I also observed the same conformity. Those who believe in fake meats being healthy also believe the shots are safe and effective, IVM is a veterinary medicine, Trump is literally Hitler, Biden is sharp as a tack, government and other officials are qualified and honest,...
So the moon landing was faked and people who follow a carnivore diet never fart?
Moving along…

Yes, Jimizo, I think it is some kind of insecure machismo behind it
A lot of teenage dishonesty too. Haven’t grown up on a moral sense.

Really sad.

Yes, Jimizo, I think it is some kind of insecure machismo behind it (maybe too much working out at the gym) but I would be happy to have a good conversation with someone not so emotionally driven and be proven wrong.
It’s a pity.
I enjoy conversations with reasonable conservatives and read conservative outlets .
This lot do the conservative cause a real disservice.
Teenage machismo, conspiracy theories, watching grifters and failed entertainers on YouTube etc.
As I said, a pity.

So, maybe too much machismo then
You get machismo.
You hear ‘soyboy’ and ‘cuck’ from the teenage members of the ‘alternative media’ crowd - getting ‘jacked’ and ‘liberal tears’.
Driving SUVs is a popular one but they are probably lying - too young to drive.
The older members do it less.

I don’t see it to the same degree.
Predictable in some ways, but the ‘alternative media’ types are at another level.
Absolute perfection. Incredible level of discipline.

Ah, the shallowness of someone who think's he's the smartest guy in the room. But nothing other than a case study of the Dunning Krueger effect. You must be a lot of fun at parties. And that sneer of yours says more about you than it does your targets
I’m just observing the conformity. It’s incredible. I thought getting ‘free thinkers’ to agree would be like herding cats, but they are more choreographed than a Korean boy band.
I can’t think of another group so in lockstep.
You do see this conformity, don’t you?

What is the psychological connection between advocacy of meat and climate change denial? Is it an abhorrence of life? A severe conservatism? I am genuinely curious
It’s what they have been told.
I’ve never seen such discipline and conformity in a group of people on different matters - diet, climate, medical matters, politics etc.
Maybe it’s just a matter of convenience. A bit like booking a package holiday.
They must be really boring in conversations though.

Strange comment from someone who claims to be a Brit.
Remember the ‘collusion’ in the 2019 election when Farage stood down his candidates to help the right win a decent majority?
I remember it well. Not just the ‘left’ who ‘hate democracy’.
Anyway, good news this week in the UK and France.
Funny how the populist pundits were saying just last week that this is proof of a global move to the right (even while the UK was moving left).
I read some incredible predictions on the number of seats Reform would get in the UK. Needless to say it was stunningly over optimistic.

UK politicians, just as their counterparts in Japan need to focus on their own domestic problems before looking outside their own borders
Well, it is possible to do both.

Even on a household level, I sometimes do the garden while my partner cleans the kitchen or living room.
