I like nationalism in this case. Having traveled and lived abroad extensively and seen the vitriol directed at my home country, I proudly say 'Go team USA! Blow the doors off (most of) the others.' I do root for my birth country and a few others but not the country of my residence.

Yeah, I missed that somehow. Thanks. Maybe she told him to get a better job.

Posted in: US envoy to Japan expresses regret over alleged sex crimes by military personnel in Okinawa See in context

The reality has nothing to do with anything posted so far about troops lack of training, being in a country like Japan, etc. People are humans and humans commit crimes. If my memory serves me correct, when the girl was gang raped in 1995 on Okinawa, an American woman claimed she had been raped by a local but that got almost no publicity. I am not trying to minimize the crimes committed by American troops at all, but expecting the crimes rate to be zero when it is impossible everywhere is ridiculous, especially when we read about crimes by personnel in the JMSDF fairly regularly. The troops are held to the highest of standards. There are always going to be bad apples in any group of people and the Okinawan government's sole purpose of existence seems to be highlighting any crime to max in order to stoke fear. I am sure they sit and wait, same for the news outlets and anti-Americans, for the next incident so they can throw hate. I, for one, want to see the bases closed and our servicemen and servicewomen sent back home and let Japan defend itself so we don't have to constantly hear how bad they are when everyone knows full well that the crime rate of service people is more than likely in line with the population as a whole.

Pretty hard to consume 93,000 yen in food and drinks if a place is ligit. Stupid of him to go there.

No, not at all! Obviously you are unfamiliar with establishments like this.

Hell there was a time where is cost more than this just to sit down. "Table charges" could run anywhere from ¥100,000 to ¥250,000 or more in high end places.

I have drank in places in Tokyo where it cost ¥500,000 for 5 people as a table charge, and one bottle of Hennessey was ¥300,000 for a "set".

My boss paid over ¥1,000,000 than night for us to drink there

The good old days! I used to love hanging with a certain boss and the guys from one of his partner companies. They loved foreign hostesses so I could usually speak English there and the boss always picked up the tab and let me drink whatever I wanted because he knew that I disliked cognac. The guy in the story probably thought 93000 yen was a lot but that was pocket money back during the bubble.

The fifth installment is probably already being filmed. No thanks. One was pretty good. The second was fun but enough. Three was like beating a dead and dessicated horse. Now a fourth, way past its shelf life. What is going on? Then again we also find Kung Fu Panda Four in theaters. Anyone in Hollywood have a new idea? Seems not.

TokyoLivingJuly 1  11:41 pm JST

The more China and Japan hates each other, the more good old US rub its cold bony hands, hiding in a dark corner, and say "business, business

One day, you might actually post something that makes sense but I won't hold my breath while waiting.

Few years ago, I've stayed in Beijing for work for two months. Although I don't speak Chinese, I see TV dramas and movies about Japanese occupation of China everyday I was there. I've watched Flowers of War (Rape of Nanking, starring Christian Bale) too many times in the hotel I was staying. If this is not state sponsored brainwashing, I don't know what to call it.

Japan brutally occupied China for almost a decade and showed very little humanity and regard toward the civilians. It's documented. They bayoneted pregnant women while raping and massacring tens of thousands. You have no problem with that? Every August, Japan rolls out the victim card and plays like they were always a peaceful nation; the innocent victim. Peace-loving and pacifism got forced onto them. You can buy that bs they are selling if you want but don't try to sell it to me. Not once in the near 4 decades here have I heard one Japanese person speak on Nanjing. Ever heard of Unit 451? They conducted hideous experiments on Chinese people, which Japan has never acknowledged. Go read up on your history.

Higher fares to ease overcrowding. Uh huh. What are they going to do? Triple it for tourists to scare them away? Just who is a tourist anyway and what if most tourists don't even see a problem with it? The problem won't be solved. The world extremely weak yen is partly to blame. Also, if some of us who've been here for decades and are permanent residents have family or friends come to visit and decide to take a jaunt down to Kyoto, do we pay separate fares or are we all grouped together? Glad I did the Kyoto thing decades ago.

“Keita Moriyama” (names in quote marks are pseudonyms), is 41 and works for a leading communications firm. His wife works part-time. Together they earn 10 million yen a year – not bad, more than twice the national 4.14-million-yen average; still, not enough, as the couple discovered when they began to think of leaving the apartment they rent and buying a home. How much would they spend? Sixty million, they decided – “I don’t want to spend the rest of my life struggling to pay the housing loan,”

Move out of Tokyo. Biggest part of the problem gets solved. Thirty minutes to one hour away by train are beach side and rural communities and properties for sale that are about 40 percent cheaper and with more space. I've never understood the allure of living in a building with 500 other people, where you can hear all of neighbors arguments, and have to line up to get in an elevator.

Their courage and sacrifice...

> They had to no choice in the matter. They were there because the Japanese military forced them to be there not because they wanted to be there.

So. Because they were forced means that everything they did has no meaning? Standing in front of enemy fire and watching your classmates perish has no meaning?

The women, aged 15 to 19, assisted military doctors, surgeons, medics and nurses while also being given perilous tasks such as transporting ammunition, supplies, food and water to the front lines while artillery shells rained down around them. Part of their detail included burying the dead.

You are absolutely incorrect.
