Posted in: Why are Olympics so good at making us root for sports and athletes we tune out most of the time? See in context

I'm glad that people still watch the Olympics. Glad glad glad. I don't.

When I was a kid sports announcers. anchor news casters, and even the boy who lived next door always said, "It's not about politics, it's about the games."

Then, watching the games, all I heard was, "The USSR has 17 gold medals and the US 14. but with the schedule, the US could catch up. . ." It was all about politics. Even as a youngster I tired of the lie. Now I don't care. Politics are already being mixed up with the games.

If it really were about the games I'd still be watching. Now I read a lot.

Every little bit helps. These days I'd use this. It's not just warm out there.

Peaches have always been my favorite fruit. This one I definitely would like to try. Honest: I've never had a bad peach experience.

Posted in: We are not saying that one war is good and the other is bad. See in context

As to their saying not one war is good and the other bad is not to say they would prefer wars at all. Granted, the situation might be to ban Israel or to accept Russia (I vote to include Russia). The way this all shapes out in society and politics has a lot to do with it.

Posted in: Japan court OKs gender change without confirmation surgery See in context

There are inter-sex people born all the time. People with a vagina and gonads. People with vulvas and penises. Variations of sexual mix.

These people are often operated on as infants to genderize them. Some parents wait until their child is a teen and can decide what they want to do.

These people really are both he and she. I don't know why so many people don't know that.

Let this be a lesson to us all: when using a swim ring, always carry an outboard motor, just in case.

Posted in: When should a child start riding a bike? See in context

My daughter had a heck of a time. I'd run behind her, holding her up straight. When she saw that I wasn't holding on, she'd crash. Then one day, two of her friends came over and asked her if she'd like to go bike riding. She jumped on her bike and went with them. All it took was having friends to go with. I was amazed. Then she and I would bike a little after dinner so she could learn the rules.

I have to admit I felt a little sad that she learned almost instantly to bike with her friends. Seemed like I was an inadequate Dad. Still felt proud as she biked off. (She was about 5.)

I take no sides on such a divisive issue. What I can not fathom are children in that condition. Let the two leaders duke it out and leave everyone else out of it. But both get spit in the eye from me. Hate each other all you want, but get some damn food and medicine in there and get kids taken care of. Shoot me if you want, but those kids are kids and this damn war doesn't change that. What did they do?

This would be too good to pass up. Eats, drinks, and a lot of knowledge all around. And not a black tie affair. Anything I can learn about distilled drinks I might not remember the next day, but, still, looks like a lot of fun. (I know, I know. It's death in a glass and on a stick. I don't care.)

For us old guys, there's nothing better than seeing a movie at a movie theater. The bigger than life characters, the sound filling the room, catching subtle expressions . . . can't be beat. There should be lots of these places to get the full impact of the action and dialog. Kids don't know what they're missing.

8+ billion people on earth. Maybe Japan has the right idea. We'd do better with 6 or even 4 billion. Not to worry. Instead of bloodless solution the hydrogen bombs will do our work for us. Fewer babies isn't happening quickly enough. I like Japan's situation better, though.

Death. I know death is waiting for me. That's because this looks good to me and I would try it to decide if I liked it or not. It will probably kill me, but I'm just the devil-may-care type that would try anything once. Before the nutrition police get here, let me eat free or burp.

My grammar and punctuation are fine. My spelling, sometimes inspired, sometimes good. But speaking or writing in initials; it's a tough call on that. I have to look a lot of them up to know what they mean. Future generations might look at my writing as primitive. That's because IDIS about TTT when some of the ITIR are not OTW,

Dogs sweat through their paws, primarily. There are a few sweat glands on there snoots. Then comes panting. So the shoes wouldn't work well, unless I'm just missing something. When I was a kid we had a black Spaniel of the name Blacky. I worshipped that dog. Now I'm a cat man but I learned everything I could about dogs. I'm amazed I remember all this.

Posted in: 'Seven Samurai' at 70: Kurosawa's epic still moves like nothing else See in context

They based the movie The Magnificent Seven on Seven Samurai. When I was a kid, the American movie was great. Then I saw Seven Samurai. Now I laugh when I see the American version. It's dishwater thin compared to one of the most magnificent movies of all time. You can't watch it once or you won't see what you missed the first time. And the second, third, etc. Heavily layered, intense, funny, (You call yourself a horse!?), and gripping. I like movies a lot and sitting here I can't think of a better one. Honestly.

(which is astounding.) There are no very bad ones I've been to and I've been to a lot of them.

To some people, these places are no loss because they have been told by their scary leaders tell them that everything's fine, nothing to see here.

Sounds as if commenters here haven't traveled much. The police in Boston US and Chicago US are, to control my temper from my anger, let's just say they were not good police people. The police in France, Australia, Belgium, and England were great. But I would hate to try out the police from quite a few other countries. (I'm lucky. I never had a problem when I was in Japan. I was probably lucky, but they don't seem any worse than a lot of the places I've been to.)
