People becoming poorer isn’t a bug - it’s a feature of neoliberal economics.

The rich are rich because the poor are poor and all of the prevaricating mumbo jumbo in the article is code for “now we’re going to squeeze them even more.”

Posted in: Major Japanese companies offer large pay hikes, fueling hope of beating deflation See in context

Good for the workers at these large companies but for the rest of us lowly contract workers it probably means nothing but perhaps prices and the cost of living going up even more - ex. many Gaba eikawa instructors have been striking since June of last year(they were striking outside Gaba’s Ginza branch today) for a small cost of living wage increase of only ¥200 yen. Since then, the company has announced policies(requirement to register as Quilified Invoice issuers) that will result in instructors making even less

There’s no bigger grift than nuclear power. They fleece the public purse coming and going. First with irresponsible promises to secure funding and then about safety and then for the cost of cleanup or dismantling.

Posted in: Antitrust watchdog to warn Nissan for underpaying subcontractors See in context

The subcontract law prohibits companies from unilaterally deducting payments to subcontractors once they have been agreed upon ...

That was dumb. There are other ways to rip-off your contractors without directly reducing payments.

Eikawa companies like Gaba will just coerce their instructors(who are all independent contractors) into agreeing to income reductions and penalties by threatening non-renewal if the contract/agreement isn't signed. I'm sure Nissan will adopt the same strategy.

Posted in: Kishida says gov't will do 'everything possible' to boost household income See in context

Just a nasty race to the bottom right now for freelancers and independent contractors in this country as companies (like Gaba where I have worked for 16 years) are putting pressure on instructors to take a pay cut by becoming Qualified Invoice Issuers(to shift tax burden onto them) although the law states that there is no need to do so for contractors earning less than 10m a year.

Companies(like Gaba) are not renewing contracts for those who refuse. Essentially firing them.

Unfortunately the Japan “Fair” Trade Commission seems to think it’s a grey area(feature not a bug) and the companies are not technically breaking the law, stating it’s ok as long as the company is not changing conditions mid-contract - irregardless of how long you’ve been working for the company. A very unjust and unfair state of affairs

Posted in: TEPCO further delays removal of melted fuel debris from Fukushima nuclear plant See in context

At the real rate of clean-up, there might be nobody around left to do it. In any case, this is yet another capitalist screw-up that future generations will pay for. Tough luck those around at the end of this massive Ponzi scheme.

Nuclear power is the perfect crime.

Those responsible profit coming and going. - even from the mess they’ve caused.

Posted in: What was the best thing that happened to you this year and what was the worst? See in context

Worst: personal income at the eikawa I have been working at for 15 years(Gaba) fell by about 25% due to a loss of clientele due to some very poor management decisions ever since the company was taken over by Nova Holdings - to make matters even worse they’re shifting their tax burden onto their already underpaid instructors by requiring them to sign up for the new Qualified Invoice System.

Best: took on some additional work that I like. Also, visited Hiroshima and rode the Shimanami Kaido this year.

Posted in: Kishida asks firms to achieve larger pay hikes in 2024 than this year See in context

Gaba teachers have been striking since June(and again today) for just a ¥200 wage increase an end to the requirement to sign up into the Qualified Invoice System(Gaba is coercing instructors to pay the company’s consumption tax - do it or no new contract. Signing up means a loss of income for already underpaid instructors who have had no wage increase since 2008).

BOJ keeps negative interest rate unchanged; says it's watching wage trends Now that is hilarious wages have not increased much and if that is the case interest rates will stay the same or go in the negative direction

They’ll just lie about the wage numbers - they’ve done it before and they’ll do it again.
