Now, producers need to take steps to limit packaging.

This should be first on the list. How it needs to be done:

First? All this time, only male?

Or another viewpoint, just as valid:

No idea what this means. I presume this reporter is pre-pubescent so I didn't read the rest. How about some quality, Japantoday? Or just delete this post for being Off Topic™. Problem solved. For now.

Posted in: Emperor, empress bid farewell to British king, queen See in context

Not a royalist, nor do I hate them, but these two are like chalk and cheese. The British royal family are out and about mixing with their 'subjects' and the Japanese are just...not. Anytime the latter go anywhere, the entire police force are out closing down every single local road that cuts across their route. How to ingratiate oneself with the prols... The Japanese are incapable of questioning authority, but they have a total apathy towards the royal family. Most I've asked can't even remember their names.

I'm hoping for 200 when I retire in a few years since I wasn't daft enough to buy any J stocks (just a small percentage in a J index fund). I live in Japan, buy made-in-Japan, eat local produce. Where's the Australiaesque 'Proudly made in Japan' on every label? 161 is just a number. Nothing wrong with that number, it's just the comparison to a previous number. Raw materials are more expensive? Then export more and get more yen for your buck. And why is locally produced produce increasing in price? I get paid in yen and the exchange rate only adversely affects me when the yen gets stronger.

Vote me down then discuss.

Yes, took me 20 years to really mean umai, but only because I've got used to it and really need to avoid carbs. There is little I would miss if I left. Certainly not their definition of cake, biscuits or other sweet foods.

Good for the workers, but CostCo sells whatever they can make a profit on. I’ve seen tyres and jet skis for sale. Yet the onion bagels and pecan pie I used to buy are nowhere to be seen. Meat pies have disappeared last time I looked. Even their own coffee and turmeric were absent for a long while. I would respect them more if they were consistent and sold what the customers came for. And as for checking you have a receipt when you leave…

An emperor and empress rank higher than a king and queen.

How can leaders of completely independent countries be ranked? What is this global scale you allude to?

Yeah, tasteless, and as exciting as eating a cucumber, but easy to grab in the shop if you're that hungry. Unbelievably, some people actually consider it their favorite food.

Great article with the touch of humor. Tied to a chair most of the day, access to food, much less healthy food, is hard enough. This would do the trick for me. It's a terrific idea, especially for those with the sedentary jobs.

Yeah, thanks for summarizing the article.

Hollywood's alleged "wokeness"

Lol. ‘Alleged’. TBH I don’t know which is worse: wokeness or religion/religious ideals being rammed down our throats. Non-woke (actual women’s) bosoms do it for me.

That's why there were George Floyd movements in the UK and France, right? Because racism is all a US thing?

As much as that was a murderous act, they were liberals who found another bandwagon to jump on.

Posted in: The beginner's guide to celebrating Juneteenth See in context

My country abolished slavery in 1833. I don’t need a BBQ for it in 2024.

...it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Although this date commemorates enslaved people learning of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation, this only applied to former Confederate states. There remained legally enslaved people in states that never seceded from the Union. These people did not gain their freedom until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 6, 1865. [Wiki]

So this is actually an anti-confederacy political celebration; not a celebration of freedom for all slaves.

“You know how at Christmas people will say ‘Merry Christmas’ to each other and not even know each other?" Freeman said. “You can get a ‘Merry Christmas’ from everybody. This is the same way.”

No. Now it's "Happy Holidays" crap in case other 'sensitive' people get upset.

Exactly. Apple won't be trying to be first off the blocks. Like they weren't with their music player and phone. They'll offer what consumers want or need and will happily buy because it's been thought out and offers quality and class.

What a stupid question. You think if you ever get married your life is going to be a bed of roses for ever? People lose it and do unthinkable things. It's not right, bit unfortunately it's life.

Well, since presumably they've seen it and you haven't, I'm more likely to believe them

So, that would lead you to believe there is a problem with the ‘go woke, go broke’ idea?

My opinion doesn't matter. It's either fact or not. I hope it is true, though, because then the industry will start making good stories without the annoying politics.

What is it with Japan to keep on with the "virtue signaling" of masking?

A consideration for others?

In their own cars? Did their LDP big brothers not tell them masks were unnecessary? No thought required.

“Hotaru no Hikari” was written in 1881 by Chikai Inagaki and it copies the musical score of “Auld Lang Syne” note for note"

Well, copying note for note is not 'writing' now, is it?

But fast forward to now and J-pop is definitely not copied from anywhere.

The goose-step reminds me of when I was in East Germany back in the 70s.

I still see elderly people alone in their cars wearing masks. From my own observations, the younger elementary kids mostly stopped wearing them, but the upper grades onwards still wear them, including from the same families. I wonder if it's puberty and the emotional insecurity that comes with it. I met a 5th grader who is always with her close friend. The one time her friend wasn't there, she took the mask off. Next time her friend was there and it was back on. The old folk are just afraid of dying, I guess. Alone in their cars...
