Just confused. How did Hanyu register his same-sex marriage in Japan?

Did he register his marriage in some foreign jurisdiction but not in Japan?

2 ( +19 / -17 )

He should have moved to Los Angeles, CA, many prominent people have move there in the past to get away from heavy media coverage in their own countries. Go there for 2 or 3 years until things calm down. Now that said, if he truly wanted to be married, that is what he should have done. I think he is using the media as an excuse.

11 ( +17 / -6 )

What? So he's essentially saying he doesn't have the spine to stand up for his her(?) so he'll just skate off into the sunset and leave her to fend for herself.

I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason for this divorce is because his ex-wife is actually attracted to men.

Fame is a social debt that weighs people down. It genuinely sucks when you can’t even go grocery shopping without people wanting a photo.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

When you're one of the most famous people around and you try to keep a key part of your life totally secret in a democratic society, you're just asking for trouble. Openness and honesty is the best policy in this case.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Just an excuse !

If Hanyu wore a sick mask to the grocery store, everyone would just assume he's a typical non-famous young Japanese male university student. How would people know he's Hanyu? Just from his eyes? Don't think so.

what a quitter.... he got married in Tokyo with a man he met at a skating competition.

1 ( +10 / -9 )

Yuzuru Hanyu could register a same sex parentship...

The skaters formal nuptials could have been performed (example) in UK.

Same-sex partnerships in Japan

https://www.marriageforall.jp/en/marriage-equality/japan/

Three months, common calendar some 91/2 days?

Saying the couple has been troubled by slander, stalking and overheated media reporting.

"When I thought about the future, I decided to divorce because I wanted my partner to be happy, to be happy without any restrictions,"

Yuzuru Hanyu, is a clever fellow, from media reports, level headed, not to taking important personal decisions in haste.

I am sure, Hanyu plus partner gave a commitment fully understanding all the pitfalls of a "celebrity marriage" the consequences. possible unsuspected media scrutiny, its implications etc.

Maybe smarter to have simply announced a parting of ways, and left it as that, called on the advice/services of a media PR agency.

The risk here is to create more questions than answers.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

So what is it?

Did he divorce him or her?

Just askin'!

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Well, he just moves on with his life and career. I'm just sceptical as to why he had to announce his divorce to the media. It's his business and no one else's. I just say "No comment" to the media. Simply put. No need to justify yourself to anyone except your partner and yourself.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

How does Samit Basu know it was a same-sex marriage? Very unlikely it was.

It's not like moving just from one place to another. There's the visa issue and other immigration issues to consider.

Why would a gay man having a same sex marriage be unlikely?

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

Some of the comments have zero sympathy.

First off, who would run away from their beloved home country to escape media coverage? Run to live somewhere else? People speak as if it's that easy to abandon everything you know.

And obvious he had to announce the divorce so the media would stop bugging her and her family. Is possible she and her family is suffering huge mental stress from the whole thing and he wanted her to be happy and not suffer in such a marriage. Just wish them both well.

What has any of this to do with social justice? You're not making any sense, mate.

Just having a laugh Roy. We know he's not gay. In fact, he's never come across a little queer.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Blaming others for your failed marriage. Sounds like a narcissist

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Roy, you can’t blame anyone for thinking he’s gay and married to the same sex.

The article doesn’t even stipulate and keeps calling, whoever it is, “his partner”. Usually a telltale sign when trying to avoid saying so. Also his excuse for getting a divorce is somehow because of his inability to protect his spouse. One of the most bizarre excuses I’ve ever heard. However, it would kind of makes sense coming from a gay who might think he’s under some kind of persecution. Not out of the realm of impossibility.

Also, this boy is quite effeminate for a male so it’s not surprising that someone would assume that he’s gay.

I have no idea if the man is gay or not (nor do I care for that matter) but even if he isn’t, that was probably one of the gayest excuses to get a divorce that I’ve ever heard.

Celebrity* **marriage *is a minefield of gossip newsprint, worth its weight in innuendo gold.

The more obscure, hide behind the curtain, “Don’t Frighten the Horses”, the timespan, the strange occurrences.

The more that jaunts the boring commute to work, nose in the gossip columns, "did he ever?", face knee deep in a bucket of fluffy cappuccino, the incomprehensible need to delve into celebrity marital indulgences.

A browse through People publication is a wonderworld of a mad mad world of sometime wild, incomprehensible, bonkers erratic behavior, when walking down the aisle in regret.

Marriages that last 55 Hours Britney, 4 days Nicolas Cage, 9 days Carmen Electra & Dennis Rodman, 2 weeks Eddie Murphy........ Lukas Gage & Chris Appleton: 6 Months........

It is quite natural to become inquisitive to ask/wonder why.

Three months for Yuzuru Hanyu and his partner, gender seems to be a mute point, in the scheme of heartbreak a secondary point.

For J women families it is the ignominy of a daughter being left on the life's top shelf, unwanted, childless. neighbor pointing to an empty pram hanky to wipe away a tearful eye .

Abandoned. snivel.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Lots of baseless rumors and unfounded speculation here.

Just confused. How did Hanyu register his same-sex marriage in Japan?

Where on earth did you come up with this? There is no evidence whatsoever Hanyu is in a same-sex marriage.

Also, this boy is quite effeminate for a male so it’s not surprising that someone would assume that he’s gay.

For a European or American Hanyu may seem effeminate. Not so much for Asians. Asian men are often petite/skinny, well-dressed and take care of their looks. No evidence there of gayness. Japanese "hosts" meet this criteria and are regarded by Japanese women as very macho.

I hope the media backs off King Hanyu in this sad time.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Like it or not, I suppose the reality in Japan is that if you refer to your partner in Japan as "paatonaa" and not gendered words like danna or shujin (for hubby) or tsuma or kanai (for wife), everyone is going to assume you're gay. This can be seen in the comments above.

A quick google produces multiple Japanese weekly tabloid articles about his partner being an older female musician. Who is actually quite famous in her own right. Unfortunately for the lady, On top of what is already massive interest in Hanyu himself, I think she culturally hits the bullseye for a "celeb" in Japanese slang, which as-used means a well-appointed wife with a huge aura of wealth and sophistication. An article Google quickly found me talks about her beauty, her figure, and her style, as if such things were justification for paps to chase her and photograph her going about her business.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

If he really loved her (or him), he wouldn't give up so quickly. Nobody forces him to look at the social media drivel either.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Who dear? Me dear? Gay dear? NO dear, beg your pardon?, "How VERY dare you"

The colour size or fuffy girly material of Yuzuru Hanyu double storage armpit holster tactical sponge bag bears little or no relation to his soon to fade into obscurity marriage woes

Thousands of J women, some of a certain age, have hot flushes at the thought of Yuzuru Hanyu, our business had to stop all work and provided live coverage of Yuzuru Hanyu Olympics glory Kochi Nagoya.

So what could be considered nosey parker, mind your own business enquires into his sexual gender preferences could entice a global conflict, be afraid, very afraid. Ho Humm

The media can bug all they want. It doesn't mean that people are required to answer their questions or even talk to them. That's a matter of choice.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Poor girls are often chosen by rich boys that want to hide their gay behaviour. Media can’t compromise themselve today because this is a raped and very unhappy life for the girl. Imagine the kids who have such a father ?

That’s the difficulty when a prince pick a normal girl. Is he truly in love ? or does he want a weak girl that will have no choice but to protect him and accept his perverse ways of life ? (mistress, SM tendances, gay lovers..).

That way a question around the lack of nobility strength of the next empress. It is important they are educated to say « no » when they don’t have the background.

We are always careful today and media does a great job to prevent sex crime and protect those young naive girls who don’t know the rule of fame that let those men think they can do what they want when they want and don’t have to obey the law or anything. The message should be « don’t sell a fake dream wife for poor girls ».

Congratulation to media for a great job !

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

the couple has been troubled by slander, stalking and overheated media reporting.

the more you keep things hidden, the more people want to find out what you’re hiding.

the whole thing sounds like a publicity stunt, or just a scapegoat……but even if it’s sincere, just put everything out in the open from the start.

that way, maybe initially it would be a big deal to the “media”, but no one will care after a month.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

There are many fish in the pond Hanyu San

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

He married a woman. A slightly older woman, if the tabloid reporting is correct.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Weird. Maybe he came out.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Hanyu sounds like a real wimp to me.

Challenges should be met , not avoided

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Was there a prenup? How much does he/she get?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

For a European or American Hanyu may seem effeminate. Not so much for Asians. Asian men are often petite/skinny, well-dressed and take care of their looks.

I disagree. Hanyu is effeminate in Japan 女々しい。It’s not that he cries and there’s nothing wrong with crying but the way he cries. He cried like a little girl with that accident at the rink during warm ups. He’s delicate. Nothing wrong with that but Hanyu is the opposite of macho. Get a grip!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Having said all that, the mass media in Japan can be something else.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why does marrying a woman and divorcing her make him not gay, if he is gay. It wouldn’t.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Effeminacy?

The key words in Artistic Ice Skating?

Art, poise, expression, emotion, story telling, flair, creative dance, the gesturing flamboyance.

Ice skates over boxing gloves.

Spins, finesse, panache.

Not shot putting, or throwing a Javelin. Artist impression,

Hanyu, day in day out must train, to perfect his complete control of every discipline to become the World/Olympic champion class gold medal winner time and again.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

One thought, slander, stalking and overheated media reporting, all allegedly led to the breakdown of Yuzuru Hanyu marriage in just three months.

What actions led to such sadness within their relationship?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

ICYMI,

"... and I found it unbearable," he said., adding his partner had supported him, "even though she couldn't take one step out of the house".

SHE couldn't take one step out of the house. SHE.

Is he actually homosexual? I don't know. And I don't care. That's his business.

Figure skaters (both m&f) do tend to be rather dramatic or even narcissistic, but it's ridiculous to paint them all with the same broad brush. It's a very physically and mentally demanding sport.

How about cut him (and the people related to him) some slack, paparazzi-type folks.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Why does marrying a woman and divorcing her make him not gay, if he is gay. It wouldn’t.

Agreed. It could easily just be a show. Much like the idols who agree to stay single so their fans think they have a chance. Hanyu doesn't want his obasan fans to leave him so he's got to project exactly the right image.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Can't we just leave former celebrities alone? Then they'd be together. Loving relationships between 2 consenting adults are a good thing. The guy is clearly an athlete. Doesn't matter if he is straight or guy or bi. I don't care.

I don't know if Japan has anti-stalker laws, but perhaps Japan needs them AND to enforce them.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

There are many famous athletes who keep their private life private.

For example I have no idea if mitoma or ohtani are married or have partners

If you advertise your private life don't complain when it comes back to bite you

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I dare masculine "men" here to train like he does. You have no idea how much dedication it takes to be able to spin 4 times in the air.

Don't NHL ice hockey teams use artistic skating folks for coaching tips? I heard that they do. Artistic skaters have incredible speed and power to weight to jump so high and do the spins. Serious ice hockey players, men's men if you like, will respect Hanyu who can probably skate rings around them, albeit without a stick, the puck, and physical contact from opponents.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

He's a hardworking and strong and persistent like any successful athlete. Doesn’t make him not effeminate? Are you saying effeminate persons can’t do hard training?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Hanyu, day in day out must train, to perfect his complete control of every discipline to become the World/Olympic champion class gold medal winner time and again.

So he’s an effeminate person who day in day out must train, to perfect his complete control of every discipline to become the World/Olympic champion class gold medal winner time and again.

A person who day in day out must train, to perfect his complete control of every discipline to become the World/Olympic champion class gold medal winner time and again is not necessary a macho person.
