Fighto!
Will the cheating doctor stand down from his practice? That will be interesting.
thepersoniamnow
Everytime someone needs to be taken down, they find the smallest things and then criminally print their own stories for everyone to read.

Let's see so that would mean in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc only first nations contestants should be alowed to compete. So much for inclusion. And the point about having a married boyfriend, there was nothing in the rules about that. The whole thing is ridiculous. She will be better off not being Miss Japan.
oldman_13
Good, the whole thing seemed very shady from the start.
Not mentioned is that this was not just about an affair, but that doctor/influencer had sway on the judging as well.

Another red letter day for scandal journalism. I hope the reporter is proud of himself.

Karoliina Shino was crowned Miss Japan. What does it matter if she is in love? And not a virgin now? She is Very beautiful and wears the Crown of Miss Japan like a Queen!
deanzaZZR
Not a good look. My first reaction was "Who cares" until I saw she was hooking up with a married man.
dagon
The Miss Japan Association should deeply reflect on why in cases of infidelity the socioeconomic consequences fall disproportionately on the unmarried female and not the married man.
See Becky, civil penalties.
Gene Hennigh
This is very unfair and disappointing. So what if she had an affair. Is she supposed to relinquish sex because she might be Miss Japan someday? There is no evidence that this doctor did any influencing. It's just a shame that as the first foreign born winner she stepped down. She did nothing wrong regarding her award. It's not likely that she had the affair to win. Isn't she allowed as an adult to have a sex life? This is yellow journalism at its ugliest.
Asiaman7
I truly feel sorry that her personal life has become so public. People in committed relationships should not be romantically involved with others without their committed partner’s agreement. This poor woman got mixed up with the wrong “player.” She’s apparently not completely innocent, but he was likely taking advantage of and disrespecting her. She’s obviously best without him and will likely come out stronger. But it’s so sad that this had to become so public.
Asiaman7
According to Oricon News, this is the Instagram page of the joker (doctor) she was involved with. Yes, she could do better.

The bigger problems is that these misogynistic competitions still exist.
The persistent issue with these beauty pageants, often characterized by participants conforming to narrow and idealized standards, raises serious concerns. These events promote a manufactured perception of beauty that excludes and potentially harms the vast majority of women who don't fit such unrealistic molds. The relentless pressure to achieve this unattainable ideal fuels the body shaming industry, pushing unrealistic expectations that prey on insecurities and exploit desires for anti-aging solutions and quick fixes.
Instead of perpetuating these harmful narratives, let's encourage critical thinking and empower our children to recognize the constructed nature of these competitions. We can emphasize the importance of appreciating diverse beauty standards and individual strengths, celebrating what makes every person unique, rather than chasing manufactured ideals.
shogun36
They criticized here because she “wasn’t very Japanese.”
Then they take her crown away, because she actually does act “very Japanese” (affair with a married man.)
Make up your mind, fools.
Choose one.
Well, either way, let’s see who’s number 2.
Meiyouwenti
The beauty pageant’s organizers attempted to boost the popularity of this outdated event by bringing in new blood but it backfired. What the JT article didn’t mention is the fact that the plastic surgeon she was having an affair with was one of the judges of the contest.
oldman_13
Ultimately this Miss Japan title was meaningless, since the winner of this pageant does not represent Japan at the Miss Universe competition (there is a separate Miss Universe Japan contest).
itsonlyrocknroll
Dedicated to crowning a representation of the "foremost beauty of all Japanese women." ……..
"Seriously reflects on our responsibility in bringing about the series of disturbances."
The association also offered its "deep apologies" to concerned parties, including sponsors and judges, and said the competition's top honor will remain vacant for the rest of the year, the statement said.
A mixture gibberish, incoherent confusion.
The charge, disturbance in the force, Ukraine-born Miss Japan Karolina Shiino has been a rather naughty girl, allegedly engaging in some slap tickling the stethoscope an influencer medical professional.
"I don't feel negative toward that way of thinking. Rather, I believe such views provide an opportunity for reflection,"
Really?...... Mirror Mirror on the wall, I was once the fairest of them all, I wear my crown upon my head, only for inner strengths, looks and actions to strike me dead.
You could live in this country for a millennia and never comprehend the culture.
I know I never will.
Gorramcowboy
I'd be vexed if I was one of the finalists. I'd demand that the contest be redone, or at least rejudged based on what was presented originally. Think of all the time and money that they put into it for all to be a sham.
Alfie Noakes
It's Kyodo, which refers to rape as non-consensual sex.

People who are saying that there is nothing wrong with her having an affair with a married man, is what is wrong with the world today. She did wrong. He did wrong too. Why break up someone elses marraige? There are so many single bachelors in Japan and you had to go with the married doctor? If she were your daughter, would you be okay with her doing that, or would you strongly advise her not to? If you were the doctors wife, would you be okay with that? Where are your values?
Cards fan
Not even remotely true. They don't care about her being a "virgin" either. The only 2 requirements to be eligbile is to 1) be a Japanese citizen, and 2) be unmarried. They even explicitly say one's marriage record or having children does not make you ineligible.
Cards fan
No one is saying she doesn't have the right to a sex life. Why have sex with a married guy? Are advertisers not allowed to have a say in who they sponsor, or who represents their brands?
Antiquesaving
Stop trying to make this bigger than it is, or about sexism, blah blah blah.
Read the criteria for the winner:.
read the "and actions"!
Having an affair with a married man shows clearly that she lacks proper judgement.
As for the man/doctor, he didn't run in a contest with the above criteria to win.
Perhaps the bad publicity will cause his hospital to have him resign but it is irrelevant.
The problem here is the " married" part, it clearly shows she lacks proper judgement to represent Japan.
JJE
The person from Ternopil in west Ukraine was doing someone, who happened to be a doctor, on the judging panel.
In other words, the judging process became corrupted. These things happen when you are blinded by the light.
funkymofo
The entire beauty pageant concept seems like an anachronism.

Karolina officially has a Japan's citizenship but ethnically not Japanese because she doesn't have any Japanese blood. Japan is one of ethnic nations, not multi-ethnic. American Professor Donald Keene had a Japanese citizenship at age of 86. He spoke Japanese very fluently and studied Japanese culture for decades. He used to say he wanted to be a Japanese, but he said he was not Japanese ethnically. After he died after 8 years, it is said that half of his ashes went back home to the US and half of his ashes was buried in Japan.
Peeping_Tom
I couldn't care less if she was born in Ukraine, not ethnic, or if she's shagging a married geezer. That's irrelevant in my book.
However, I do have an issue with a woman below average-looking (generous here) being crowned Miss Japan.
Japan is awash with FAR MORE BEAUTIFUL women than she'll ever be!
Similarly, a boyfriend juror should indicate a certain bias during the selection process.

Please! Anyone male or female knowingly having an affair with a person already married has a total lack of judgment.
Yes the person that knowingly has or continues to have an affair with a married person is at fault!
Yes so is the married person at fault but without a willing partner it is a far more difficult thing to do.
She is no innocent little girl! She is 26 an adult and knowingly having an affair with a married man was wrong.
A little warning to those thinking this isn't a big deal.

My family has over 100 years of immigration to Brazil, my grandmother was born in Brazil, my mother, and myself too, but, some very stupid people use to say "go back to Japan" - I am proud of my Japanese ancestry but I am Brazilian. Someone who lives in Japan since 5 years old, had Japanese education, got Japanese citizenship IS JAPANESE. I am very sad and sorry for this scandal that revealed her private life. This episode made clear that Japanese society has to think better and discuss about diversity, about

I don't understand the logic of these liberals here who think it's ok to sleep with a married man. First, it's a classless act that shows no dignity on both parties. The girl can pick and choose any guy in Japan to be with, but she chooses a self-indulgent doctor to play around with. As the winner of Ms. Japan, her standards in beauty and life are supposed to be higher than the average person since she's representing all the females of Japan as a role model. It's kinda ironic how the winner of Miss Japan doesn't mind being the #2 girl though.
Tamarama
Funny. I would have thought having an extramarital affair makes her quintessentially Japanese....

He is on other news services.
Mainichi Shimbun report says she was told he was divorced, then found out he was still married but continued the affair.
They reported his name and that he is an Instagram influencer, with a talent agency and a plastic surgeon as well as a judge in the miss Japan contest.
Set aside the affair.
Not revealing her connection to a judge is reason enough to be disqualifed.

I will never understand any man or woman that has an affair with a married person.
I have seen far too many seem so surprised when they finally get to be with the cheating man or woman and also get cheated on.

fwiw, these beauty contests are all private businesses and have no authority, beyond trademarks, to appoint someone "Miss Japan". They are not doing it on behalf of the Japanese public or for any public good. They are using the title "Japan" for their own commercial ends. If they mess up, they deserve derision, not our sympathy. They do not represent Japan so we would not be laughing at ourselves.
While its good for people's private lives to be private, "Miss Japan" is a massively loaded concept whose value is entirely based on what people project onto it. If a candidate having an affair with a married judge stops people projecting the same value onto the concept, then she must be a bad candidate. Lots of celebs have been dropped by sponsors over the years for the same image based reasons. Perhaps it would be nice for Miss Japan to be a 50 year old transwoman to fight ageism and homophobia, but that would almost certainly destroy the "value" of the "brand" to the Miss Japan commercial enterprise.
proxy
I would never normally comment on how anyone looks but I feel that people who join beauty pageants are fair game for me and anyone else to pass abridgement on their looks.
I think the heart of the controversy is that she is not attractive and probably only won because of the "Ukraine sympathy." vote. There are plenty of Japanese citizens with European or African or other ancestry that are drop dead gorgeous. She is not.
browny1
Great post.
Why do such events still garner so much attention these days?
They always feel deeply rooted in the bygone razz-a-ma-tazz of the 1970s and before.
Aside from the degrading "man-trophy" aspect, they have such little relevance in this era of sms, where talent, looks, intelligence, wit, charm etc can be seen on a daily basis.
The pedestal has long crumbled.

Many moral judges on this post.
Sarunghakan Feng
Where are the male models? Or rather, get rid of this useless BC. It's nothing but obsolete practices. Also, again- it takes two to tango. Still the girls fault. And of course the man, but more so of the girls. If a married woman has an affair, it is even worse or just as bad as a married man. Then again, reproduction is separate to morality. Reproduction and biological evolution doesn't really care much for morality. It only cares for whose able to survive.

People, both men and woman admire beauty, flowers, cars the sky and yes people too and in my experience woman are much more "judgy" on looks than men and particularly of other woman.

fwiw, I think it is dog-whistle r@cist to constantly refer to a Japanese person as "Ukraine born" as in the headline here. Such information is irrelevant. Some people with two ethnically Asian Japanese people are born overseas, including one of my son's mates. No-one refers to him as "NZ born" Taro kun. That would be to "other" him.
She is Japanese.
Antiquesaving
No one "GOT" her.
She got herself! Not disclosing an affair with a married man who according the the Mainichi Shimbun was a judge in the contest was bound to come out.
In any country being intimately involved with a member of the judging panel is usually grounds for disqualification.

It's everyone's business when one of them was named Miss Japan and the other helped her do it.
They judge based on character in addition to beauty, and since she isn't even pretty you would think the former would count more. But not only did she knowingly have an affair with a married man, she then lied about knowing he was married.

I am 24 yrs old and female and thoroughly dislike beauty pageants. They are patriarchal, distasteful, and downright insulting to all women. The mere thought of thousands/millions of men ogling female bodies for some sort of sexual pleasure is very disturbing. It is a form of abuse. As for this case, I do not care what happens, but it is interesting that the said doctor was also one of the judges..........Hmm, now could not have had a bearing on the result, surely.

Adultery is not a crime.

deanzaZZRToday 06:44 am JST

Beauty pageants aren't insulting to narcissists, they probably love them, so they can't be "insulting to all women".
I am capable of looking a woman and thinking she's good looking without deriving "some sort of sexual pleasure" from it. I would imagine many men are the same.
I agree with most of what you say, and reducing people to their physical features is kind of pathetic. The woman here gets it two ways, positively in that many people will think she is conventionally pretty and negatively in that people with preconceived ideas about how a Japanese person must look will try to deny she is Japanese.
As someone who grew up with punk and goth, I find it a bit disappointing to find fashion promoting mostly very glamorous versions of women. I thought we may have moved beyond this in my lifetime. Instead of some advancement on Kate Bush or Siouxsie Sue, we've ended up with a mega glamour Taylor Swift and Beyonce. This is regression not progress.

This is Japan and it has some very archaic laws, so if your spouse cheats on you and gets pregnant from the other guy and decides to keep the child, under Japanese law that chil is legally your!
Yes even if you divorce, even if the DNA proves it isn't yours the system doesn't recognize the paternal father.
This is an old article but the laws still have not been changed

No big conspiracy here.
If this had been a Japanese woman with the same history, it would have come out and the results would have been the same.

Even if that is so, these pageants have clauses just like those companies have when they make branding deals.
These Clauses are very specific, if the person brings any negative publicity to the campaign, product, brand, etc...their deal is terminated.
We have seen countless examples in recent years not just in the Miss XYZ stuff but in many other things like sports, academia, etc...

No, she did not make porn videos, she took nude photos to help pay her way through college and when Penthouse found that out they rushed get those prints as fast as they could. To each his own, I think every race has beautiful women, but beauty is subjective, personally for me, I don't understand the allure of this woman, she's not ugly, but just hot looking, I would kindly disagree, average at best, but that is just my own opinion. Each to his own. But I do prefer more ethnically exotic-looking women. I don't care what this woman does in her private life, I just wonder why she thought that in 2024 she could keep a secret like that from the public?

The rules don't say nuffink about not having affairs!

People commenting on her looks have obviously never browsed a fashion magazine here. Japanese go crazy for this type of girl. If she was wearing a Breton top, a beanie and glasses (think Where's Wally ?) they have a meltdown.
smithinjapan
Did that dirt-rag tabloid also mention the name of the doctor and where he works? Has said doctor had to step down and relinquish his titles, including marriage? No?
No one in Japan has ever, ever had a love affair, so I understand the sin of this non-pure Japanese doing it and the shock of the nation.
Asiaman7
”A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
And a child in the home of an adulterous mother is worth 100 provable affairs by her husband when suing for child custody in Japan.
In Japan, those who have physical custody get physical custody. Period.
NotThe One
If she was single then she was not cheating. The married doctor who probably leverage his connection to pageants was cheating. I am pretty sure he introduced himself as a doctor first and pageant judge second.
As an influencer and a "real Japanese," he is also in the public eye; so should he not be scrutinized even more for cheating on his wife with a public figure?
Where is his deep bow and apology? Is it ethical for judges to sleep with contestants?
natsukii
wow, an affair? she was truly japanese.
itsonlyrocknroll
It is all the self righteous moralizing,
I have been staying with friends homes in Nagoya, on a recent business trip.
Within spitting distance, is a love hotel, no names, 24/7 stream of customers, my colleague stated to me sometimes they come fully dressed for the occasion.
So I find it remarkable Ukraine-born model "shocking" Shiino is bent double apologising in solemn regret.

""Eligible applicants must hold Japanese citizenship, be unmarried and be between 17 and 26 years old as of the end of their application year. In selecting its winners, the contest says it judges candidates based on their inner strength, looks and actions.""
1- Eligible applicants must hold Japanese citizenship, NOT Necessarily , as long as they live legally in the nations they should be accepted.
2- be unmarried, NOT Necessarily, all women of all ages are should be allowed to enter and compete, why do they have to be single???\
3- and be between 17 and 26, wow, again all ages should be allowed to enter and compete.
4- the contest says it judges candidates based on their inner strength, looks and actions."" AGREE 100% and that's why Citizenship, Martial status, & age should be scarped, it is DESCRIMINATORY.

I am sure that this Magazine went out of it's way to take her down.
Too Sad that she has to bow and give up her crown, she will always be a queen and a former Miss Japan like many others before her no matter what, the crown is just a symbol.

Not in the minds of the Japanese society overall.
gokai_wo_maneku
This story has made international news. It is on CNN.

Adultery is wrong. It‘s sad that so many on here are downplaying it, if not even defending it.
gokai_wo_maneku
Maybe she can be reinstated.

I think you've missed the point! No one condoning Adultery...

Even though Karolina Shiino, was named the 2024 Miss Japan Grand Prix winner given up her title, but she knew the rules and didn't tell the competition organizers detailing her relationship with a married man. Perhaps it was just a matter of time before her hidden lie would come to the front. Some one most have threatened to out her. In her mind she was a winner but in the eyes of the people she was a lying loser. My mom always told me to always tell the truth because the truth can be only told one way. A lie can be told millions over, and the person telling the lie has to always remember what they said, which eventually changes, and with changes that's when you get caught in your little lie.

At least she did the honorable Japanese thing:
She admitted her mistake, apologized and relinquished her crown.
How often does a Western woman do that?
Saine
This is a situation of "everyone sucks here."
But one does notice that Japanese society seems to put pressure on the woman to take the fall in these types of cases. In my company I have seen several cases where women employees were pressured into quietly resigning due to affair situations while the male employees actually cheating on their spouses were pretty much allowed to carry on free of any criticism.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Who says it is wrong? The Bible? There is a reason it doesn't feature in any sane country's criminal laws.
bass4funk
Most religions, not to mention societal norms and values, the Japanese are not overly religious, but adultery can get you in serious trouble, financially, emotionally, morally.
What?? Dear lord…

-Venessa Williams lost her crown due to nude photos.
-This woman was caught with a married man. As an ex-wife of a doctor, who had an affair with a woman shortly after our marriage it was very painful and embarrassing time. This is not a 19-year-old who did not know any better and so I have no sympathy for her what-so-ever.
So, losing a crown to nude photos (America) versus losing a crown to an affair which is worse? I have empathy for Venessa William's as she was very, very young when that happen and again none for this 26 plus year old woman who now has a conscience after being exposed and apologizing to the now embarrassed wife.
Furthermore, after seeing all the runner ups next to her, that were indeed born in Japan and who had clearly Japanese blood lines whether mixed or not, were absolutely stunning and it was incredibly sad they were not chosen in the first place.

Adultery is not illegal in Japan.

( Vanessa Williams was stripped of her Miss America crown in 1984 after Penthouse published nude photos of her without her permission). The world is in a completely different place from 1984, 38 year's ago. Besides Vanessa has probably gone on to do better without the crown.

The land of passive aggression.
They can't outright say they disagree with her winning,
that would go against the virtue signal they set up-
so sic some rag mag into her personal life until they find (or create) some red meat.
She was probably offered a settlement, for her discretion...
I prefer when the tiaras were from Mikimoto!

Except when it is.
“If the act of adultery can be proved, then a claim for compensation arising from the damage caused by the act of adultery will be upheld.”

No one knows if the wife of the doctor accepted or consented to that situation.
Only her knows if this is something wrong.
No wonder Japanese have so little sex life and kids. They are just crucified for any supposedly morally wrong sex outside in a bed after official partnership...

Almost all young women all over the world do not take the Vow Of Chastity. Why should Japan expect Karolina to be a virgin all her life?
Does Japan want her to become a nun in a convent?

8t, I have news for you, yes, it is illegal in Japan and the wife and or husband can sue both their partner and the other individual and which I did because they were openly dating in my area, and it came back to me. And I sued because I was running a business out of our home and what they did affected my business and my income because Japanese do not like scandal or trouble and will leave at the site of it at least at the time of our marriage.

1) "In selecting its winners, the contest says it judges candidates based on their inner strength, looks and actions." Her actions, which the article says were to continue relationship after finding out, show a weakness of her character, and action to continue after finding out the truth is not righteous.
2) Looks - it doesn't matter her ethnicity, but pictured together with other contestants, they seemed to be more visually appealing aka better looking than her.
I thought her winning was a political move, but now I'm unsure as I couldn't understand well from article and comments - that cheating doctor, is he just an influencer like on insta, or did he influence results of contest like a judge? That matters, but in case of just influencing people on insta - is he a good role model? Though I got an impression that when it comes to "sleeping around" it's not a big deal for many men here (idk about women here), which is repulsive. It's repulsive in any country. In general, to all humans, if you can't commit, stay single and if you want - mingle. If you do commit, stay committed, otherwise it looks like a very weak person who can't control own biological urges, no discipline whatsoever, and could it be that untrustworthy in private life = untrustworthy in business (no ethics, no morals, lies are involved = trust can't be upheld, etc.)?? That doctor in particular - i wonder, if he has he not only cheated but also lied to both women?? Is such person ok to influence anyone in the world??

It also seems that the Doc was hiding his married status.
There is a doubt that Ms Shiino knew the full facts about Dr Muscle
3RENSHO
'Doctor Muscle' probably lied to her...I would not trust him. He is a narcissist (from Google):
What are the symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder?
Sense of self-importance.
Preoccupation with power, beauty, or success.
Entitled.
Can only be around people who are important or special.
Inter-personally exploitative for their own gain.
Arrogant.
Lack empathy.
Must be admired.

The Miss Japan Title suits her like a crown on a queen's head.
She has a right to her private life.

The so called 'Doctor' is NOT a DOCTOR by trade.
He spends time on social media and calls himself a 'Muscle' doctor.
Probably someone unemployed and trying to make money from social media.
Could be a body builder for all we know.
He fooled and used the Ukranian woman and said he has no intention to leave his wife.
Hugh
I honestly don't understand how far sentiment has shifted in the Anglosphere on cheating.
I don't really mind myself, and she probably didn't initially know he had a wife, but she did continue the affair after finding out, and he was on a judging panel. Advertisers sponsoring this can no longer use her for anything promotional and the scandal does cause a headache for everyone.
The main job of TV personalities and beautiqueens is literally to be advertiser friendly.
Plenty of famous men in Japan have to announce a career hiatus when cheating scandals break too. It happens every year, if you actually follow news in Japan. But everyone will fit this story into their own political narrative so they can get angry.
