Fighto!
Another cowardly, violent scum in uniform. Where do they recruit these animals? James Clayton - probably a former street gang member in the US.
I'll say it, yet again : America is not exactly sending their best to Japan. Stay away from Japanese citizens, and on the base.
Zaphod
It is sad to see that the Japanese government still accepts US bases in their country.
Alongfortheride
Let them stay inside the base fences and not allowed out.
kiwiboy
Hope he's punished to the full extent of the law.
It's unacceptable, horrific and unforgivable.
But also let's remember there are nearly 80,000 American's in Okinawa with the military (active military, their families, department of defense civilians etc).
That's a LOT of people!! So as horrible as these cases are when they happen, let's not bash the military personal there as a whole. With large numbers, a certain level of terrible, unforgivable incidents is unavoidable, and let the law deal with them.
I'd love to see official stats if they exist, but I suspect the level of crime (serious or otherwise) committed by the 80,000 US military and their families is lower than average compared to the general population.
Corey
So is this referring to two different cases? Both names are Clayton, but one is James and one is Jamel? Confusing.
nero
@kiwiboy
Rape per capita in Japan: 1.1 in 100k people. Rapes by U.S personnel : at least 2 in 80k people. "At least" because those two are the ones I get to read here. What about rape per capita in America ? 30x-40x more than that of Japan. If you think you're sure Japan is like America I'm sure you don't know what you're talking about.
kiwiboy
Don't believe that for a second. Once heard that it's thought that only about 1 in 13 rapes in Japan are reported due to stigma and social circumstances.
Of course there's no way to know if a young Japanese person would be more or less willing to report one committed by a foreigner, but I have a feeling they would.
Anyway, we're getting off-topic. I don't mean to minimise this or the other crime or any crime. Any crime is unforgivable and the perpetrator should be punished to the FULL extent of the law. My point was simply that there are a lot of American's in Okinawa and this shouldn't unfairly reflect badly on them.
SaikoPhysco
There is so much information that is not in this article that for anyone to conclude any sort of guilt would be nothing but biased. Sure... he could be guilty, but until we get the full correct details, maybe withhold judgment.
nero
@kiwiboy
You don't have to. Neither will I take your well the locals do it too whataboutism. If they are reviled that is not an unfair reflection on them. This is a fair reflection on them. You're not a woman or have a daughter but if you did you're welcome to test your trust in them.
Gaijinjland
Great, black people already get enough hate in Japan as it is. This guy’s name is Jamel. Tell me he’s not black.
OssanAmerica
I'm not sure if Black people get any more or less hate than any other gaijin in Japan.
But yes, Jamel suggests Black. As does Airman Washington. And we could go back to 1995.
USFJ need to clamp down harder and harder on this issue as it affects way way up.
BertieWooster
And that's the truth! I don't know what US bases are doing on non-US soil in the first place.
deanzaZZR
Kick them out.
sakurasuki
This week there's news that Airmen doing some lewd act in Okinawa, now is Marine, hoorah!
Why each branch thought they need to contribute to this

DISGUSTING, that's all.
Pukey2
This is what happens when you're a US vassal state. You have no control over your own country when it comes to military and foreign policy.
Mr Kipling
Vassal state?
Japan and the US are equal partners. As can be seen by the many Japanese military bases dotted around the US...
What's that? There are none?
Japan is a subservient vassal?
nandakandamanda
The Chinese (or the Russians) would love to get in there instead of the US. Then the problems would probably be even worse.
In the meantime the US needs to keep their act clean.
Perhaps one day Okinawa will be allowed to live in peace without interference from outside players. I certainly hope so.
Shirokuma4812
Those bases operate as different worlds. There are things that happen on those bases that never get reported or are just covered up. I live near Iwakuni MCAS and I hear stories from the Marines and Sailors about the rapes and suicides that occur on a bi-weekly basis.
kwatt
What Japan needs is police just treat them as criminal by the law. Put idiots in jail for years. Never hand them over to the base. That is all.
tora
Let's see. 1:80,000 (and it's actually more than just one, as the article points out). How does that compare to the ratio of rapes to the same number of the general population in Japan?
I'll tell you. It doesn't. It's a damned disgrace.
TokyoLiving
Why Japan doesn't has some dignity and close that invasive and inefficient US military base??..
Same for the rest of the world..
I hope this is sarcasm.. LOL
bass4funk
To ensure China stays where they are at. They all leave, and China moves in.
kwatt
US soldiers are official guests to Japan. They must not commit any crime in the first place whatever. US military must keep crime zero all the time.
theFu
I have little concern over convicted rapists. Once convicted, let Japan do what they like. Nationality doesn't matter.
owzer
Whoah!! They posted photos?? I can't believe it!!
kwatt
Rapists go to jail here, for maybe some years. Maybe Japan doesn't do what they like/want.
Aoi Azuuri
Japan's dispicable LDP regime and corrupted ministries had concealed this case until end of Okinawa assembly election.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Interesting fact that I'm sure few will want to acknowledge.

Jind
I do not understand as to why Japan has foreign countries bases.
What is the purpose of this humiliation?
TaiwanIsNotChina
Hostile countries with 10x Japan's population and 5x its military expenditure next door.
kaimycahl
If the Japanese people are fed up go march in the streets and demand closure of the bases, and all of the posters here making comments write to the politicians why waste your time here. Nothing is going to happen politics rules out everything. How many times have we read about this type of incident. The same posters will be posting again and the politicians who have the power will do nothing. Politics as usual!
Samit Basu
@TokyoLiving
Japan surrendered unconditionally in 1945, that's why. Note keyword "unconditionally".
Samit Basu
@kaimycahl
Japanese aren't fed up because they don't see US bases often.
It's the Okinawans who are fed up because Japan dumped most of US troops in Okinawa.
The only way to resolve the US military presence problem in Okinawa is to declare independence and ask the US to leave as the sovereign state of the Republic of Ryukyu.
/dev/random
I'm not sure you have a leg to stand on, rooting for and from South Korea in this matter. Just like in South Korea, the US military presence is by choice and stipulated by a treaty with the US.
Risible nonsense.
bass4funk
Yeah, ok, now back to reality, that will never happen. Okinawa would be 3rd would country within 5 years.
SaikoPhysco
I was one of those American's stationed at Yokota many years ago. Learned the language, married a Japanese girl, and we have 3 son's all living in Tokyo with 3 grandchildren and hopefully more to come. For every idiot U.S. Servicemen, there are 1,000 that do their tour and go back to the states without incident. Or, like me, stay and contribute to society. I have myself 3 times on trains stopped or scolded a Chikan. I have helped keep young girls and women safe in Japan. Many American's are like me, we feel the need to get involved if we see something unjust. Even that said does not justify any crime but we're human and I firmly believe we are no worse than the average Japanese person walking around crime wise. I'll tell you what though... we are decisive and we will put our neck on the line for others even if we don't know them.
nik
And what happened? copulation Usa -japan. it's very bad to do that. Well, the police will sort it out. The most important thing is that Japan is not attacked by China and Russia, because this is the reason for the presence of American military bases in Japan, right? And if so, then the crimes of the American military are simply costs.
Jim
The voters in the Okinawa election voted for LDP backed candidates who want to keep the US base as it is with freedom to the US soldiers to do whatever they want to the locals… they voted against Gov. Danny who is a harsh critic of the US military base and the freedom these soldiers get. Now the people of Okinawa should lie in the bed they made with the LDP backed candidates and not complain about the US military doing assaults and rapes… they brought this upon themselves!!!
TaiwanIsNotChina
Technically voting for Danny left the base where it is right now.
Mr Goodman
True
Japan surrendered it's country not just it's military
However US military should not be doing these acts
Then again the Japanese self defense forces aren't much better either
Mr Goodman
That's a bit harsh .
Not all military personel are bad players
Okinawans don't deserve the disrespect either
-
kwatt
Most US soldiers are good, but some idiots commit crimes. US military can't control these idiots. This irritates Okinawan people.
Boki24
Were you asleep during history class?
Pukey2
Propaganda and fearmongering from the other side of the Pacific which is leading to the use of pawns which could become collateral damage
OssanAmerica
Irrelevant as usual. South Korea didn't surrender to anybody but hosts 73 US military bases, the third highest number.
So why is South Korea a vassal state?
Mpqholygrail
@Base4funk
been reading your posts for years. Your comments strike too close and near. You get my upvotes. (Ducks head, and runs for the bushes)

TaiwanIsNotChina,
So why do countries way smaller than Japan and Korea worldwide do not have American bases in their countries, even in majority of Asian countries?
This stuff is from old wars and war talk from USA to have bases.
Wherever USA goes, it's war.
Japan should not be a poodle for USA wars.
Gaijinjland
@Fighto
You say the same thing about every foreigner who is arrested in Japan. Tell me what country is sending their best to Japan? The majority of active military personnel in Japan are here to protect Japan because the Japanese can’t and will put their live’s in danger to do so. If that’s not the best then what is? And Japan is paying the US for the bases because they obviously want them here. Remember that.
Wick's pencil
Japan has been occupied by US since the end of WWII, it has no choice, it appears.
Time for Japan to grow a spine and kick them out.
