All this is great for us foreigners. We all hold our funds in US Dollars and Swiss Franc accounts. Nobody holds any funds in the pathetic basket case “currency” yen.
Unless you are employed by a Japanese company, like MOST of us foreigners here (tears rolling down cheeks emoji).

Japan is rapidly losing it's status as a developed country. For 30 years or more they have been in the doldrums. It had to happen. And with demographics the way they are, anyone betting for a return to 1:1 to the dollar anytime soon is deluded.

Jaoan has lost literally 8,000,000 of their entire population. It peaked in 2010 I think. At now around 120,000,000 and in exponetial population decline, they still can't feed their populace. This means they have serious systemic issues. Stop blaming tourists for your woes Japan.

A lot of people don't know they have heart disease. A quick search on line shows he looked really fit.
In the last couple of years, numbers of perfectly fit young people keeling over due to heart issues seem to be really increasing. This is just the latest example.

Most of us who have experienced similar discrimination just tell our friends and family members in disbelief, and we generally don’t have documentary evidence.
Might be. Somehow I doubt my embassy would get the same results though.

Thanks. You're dead right. And my original comment somehow gone (I wonder why).
(Part of my original comment):
The hotel is only in trouble because the guy was an Israeli. I know plenty of foreigners who have been turned down for apartments (as people mentioned above), onsens and hotels. In fact it happened to me a few years ago and I speak fluent Japanese. I think many foreigners who have been here for some time would have similar stories.
Very true. However, in this case, the hotel manager actually wrote the rejection in a text and explained his reasons in detail.
The traveler simply forwarded that text over to the Israeli Embassy, which then took action.

I am under no illusion that I would have been brushed aside immediately if I had complained to the authorites regarding ANY of the discriminatory practices that have taken place against me or people I know here over the years. And my cases would certainly NEVER have made national news.
That's the power of Israel and it's truly global reach. It's actually frightening.

Kyoto is already overwhelmed. And Mt Fuji is limited to 4000 visitors or something a day and you are charged for climbing it. Small towns are putting up barriers to block tourists and this will just increase.
And on top of it, they are going to be charged more than the locals under a two tier pricing system.
This is not a policy of "welcoming" tourists at all. The government out of touch with reality.

High quality? Apparently you haven’t bought much off Temu or AliExpress.
Absolutely rifgtm, most of it is junk. However when it comes to green technologies, China is far, far ahead. 50% of cars that are sold in China are electric and they are on track to phase out ICE cars conpletely by 2025 and now is the world's biggest car exporter too. BYD has overtaken Tesla as the biggest electric car marker and is way better quality now. Meanwhile, the west are backtracking on phasing our ICEs. There was no way they'd meet those targets without China.
Top German car engineers and even Musk has also admitted it's game over. And think it was the west that began mandating green technologies be shoved down our throats. Then when China obliged they are snubbed.
All tarrifs will lead to is a system where western companies will stay inefficient and lethargic and move further behins. See high speed rail for example.
And watch China retaliate with their own trade barriers and they'll just sell their technology to the ever expanding BRICs, which countries are clamouring to join.

There are trade barriers being put up all over the world to combat China's product dumping, WTO rule-breaking subsidies, forced labor, and environmental degradation.
See also solar panels, wind turbines, and many, many more things.
It's not product dumping. It's producing all the things they said were going to save us from global warming at high quality, efficiently and cheaply. Something the west refused to do, or did so inefficiently or at very high cost or just not at all. Now we can have all of these cheaply, they don't want them since it doesn't fit their political narrative. Instead they focus on preparing us for WW3.

The time line and details of the latest measures to halt the decline of Japan are vague, as per usual. And the 40,000 yen tax reduction is for June only, as per my undestanding. Temporary fix? It won't change a thing, apart from increasing the national debt, since it is printed out of thin air.
