Let them buy it and have a go at it.

Protectionism like this is one of the reasons Japan has been struggling so much.

Good. I just can't buy his explanation that he never pulled the trigger. How is that possible? Do bullets have a fuse?

That said. If someone hands you a gun and says it's safe. Would you have any reason to doubt that? As a defense, that makes more sense to be. Claiming you didn't pull the trigger just sounds silly.

Exactly. Japan has a hard time handling the mynumber system. No way it can be trusted with nuclear secrets.

Posted in: Indicted mogul takes on Japan's 'hostage justice' system See in context

I once read an op-ed on this topic in the New York Times written by some Japanese professor.

His opinion was that westerners simply don't understand Japan's system of justice, which is based on the guilty coming to terms with their crimes. He tried to argue that Japan's was a more evolved and modern system, benefiting from its centuries old customs and traditions, and that the U.S. system is new and naive.

To me, Japan's system looks more like the middle ages in Europe. Think for example the Spanish Inquisition. "confess, and your spirit will be pure again!" which of course is forced by torture.

With Japan's demographics, I just can't see any hope for sustainable wage increases.

They should keep him in there and make the lesson about the dangers of not speaking English.

I'm sure Ohtani is thinking he should have paid more attention in his English classes.

Power of attorney perhaps?

Before anyone accuses him of being a dummy for doing such a thing, how capable were you with your Japanese banking procedures without speaking the language?

Obviously, he trusted the wrong guy.

@James

I'm talking about this crap: https://solution.toppan.co.jp/education/service/navima.html

I pity the kids that have to use it.

Posted in: Digitalization drive proving tough for Japanese school teachers See in context

Problem is, the software that is being used for programs for studying math and kanji is absolutely crap. It amounts to nothing more than a paper worksheet on a computer, which is even worse than a regular paper worksheet because the kids need to use their finger or a graphic pen to write, and the system is full of glitches. So teachers are probably thinking what's the point. Personally, I can't. see it.

If you want to use digital resources, use better ones - not the useless crap designed by friends of the monkasho.

Posted in: Japan trying to send message to Trump: Don't cut a deal with China See in context

If it's any consolation, the world will only have to deal with him for 4 years. That's enough for Trump to pardon himself, funnel more business into his hotels, cut deals worldwide to prop up his businesses, and get out.

I don't think he really cares about anything else.

You can also tell an unlicensed taxi from a licensed one if it's not a black Toyota sedan from the 80s with seats covered in doily lace and a driver over 70 who will have trouble finding your destination and zero ability to communicate in English.

Japanese people that I've spoken to who are worried about the weak yen have expressed in a vague sense that it will weaken Japan's power as a nation without understanding how, or providing an example.

This is as pure an example as you can get.

Posted in: George Takei picture book on his years in internment camps to be published next spring See in context

What happened to him and all the other Japanese-American internees was terrible.

But it pales in comparison to the American/European internees in Japanese camps in China, the Philippines, and elsewhere.

George Takei was able to rebuild his life and become very successful in America. That sort of thing could/would never happen in Japan.

Posted in: It may be difficult to win an unconstitutional judgment, but we hope more people will learn through the lawsuit that there are limits to who is eligible to run in elections. See in context

It's not just the age limit that is the problem. There are so many structural obstacles baked into the system now that make it difficult for anyone who is not connected to the LDP or Japanese establishment in any way to get anywhere politically.

Posted in: Smart girls don’t marry? Japan rushes to erase stigma for women in science See in context

This article doesn't mention the women that just leave Japan forever to pursue careers in STEM. Akiko Iwasaki is a good example. She is now one of the top immunologists in the U.S.

The country is on a mission to close the gap.

Won't be any real change for at least another generation or two.

why should my taxes go to support your child rearing that you “cannot afford”.

@David Brent

Then why should those future taxpayers pay for your pension? Fair enough.
