All countries do that if a foreign vessel crosses illegally into their territory

Entering the EEZ is allowed. The 12nm limit is the true "do not cross line" for any vessel. Fishing inside a foreign EEZ is NOT allowed.

I know this gets confusing. Just look at how much trouble China has understanding it?

Time for the Philippines to help ground that "monster" Chinese coast guard ship in their waters, forever. I'm thinking 6 huge holes under the waterline would do it.

Shave their heads, including eyebrows. That goes for the teachers in the pool area too. Whoever was there, should never been allowed to teach swimming again.

Does Japan not have WSI mandates? If the teachers aren't certified WSI (Water Safety Instructors), what are they doing teaching a swimming class? There should always be a certified lifeguard on duty separate from the swim teachers too. Those certifications ACTUALLY do matter. A few times every year, we are reading stories about a few kids drowning for no good reason. Japan needs to fix this.

This is so sad. My parents taught me to swim very young. Around age 6, they encouraged all their kids to join the local swim team. Nothing better to ensure your kid doesn't drown than getting them on a swim team for 2 yrs. They don't need to be all that good, but they will be comfortable in the water .... of any depth.

Posted in: Japan confirms China set up buoy over its southern continental shelf See in context

Japan should just take the buoy. No explanation needed. It is in their EEZ waters. If they replace it, take the next ones as well.

I suspect that Japan makes wave data available for tsunami prediction centers world-wide. Can't China just get the data from those existing S-Net resources? https://earth-planets-space.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40623-021-01368-6

If China wants to contribute to the network of sensors, I bet all the other impacted countries would appreciate it.

Posted in: Trafficked Cambodian artefacts returned from US See in context

There are many more artifacts in homes and museums around the world that need to be returned to their home locations, assuming the current ruling govt will treat them with the care they deserve.

Sadly, some countries destroyed thousands to hundreds of thousands of their own historical artifacts due to political choices or wars. China's leaders in 1950-1990 destroyed so many priceless articles, it makes me cry, just a bit - all because a single mass murderer considered the old stuff as getting in the way of progress. China still does this today, as they destroy religious locations to force relocation of the people there, then come back and rebuild their replica concrete versions for tourists. So very sad.

The sad thing is that the Cambodian statues and sculptures were not taken in complete form, usually leaving the feet or other parts connected to the base behind.

"The Met" has admitted to having many other Cambodian statues and sculptures in their collection. These aren't currently on the list to be returned, but they are being tracked, finally.

The MAGA team has warped what it means to be an American for the worse. They support lying, criminals, who think winning at any cost is acceptable over a political difference. They like to wave the flag, then ignore the laws and documents that setup our imperfect country.

Remember, the US Constitution was intended as a short-term document with most of those who signed it expecting a re-write would be needed every 20 yrs as times changed. The idea of political parties was expected, but not to the extent they've taken over.

Military planners everywhere are constantly thinking up different scenarios of foreign attacks. Every military in the region will rightly be thinking up 500 different ways that China may attack their interests. Inside China, they are thinking up 500 ways for each neighboring country to attack them. That's what military planners do.

So, of course China has plans to use hypersonic missiles to attack The Philippines. A similar scenario exists to attack Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, NK, SK, and US bases in the region. That's what military planners do.

Posted in: Americans to celebrate Fourth of July with parades, cookouts — and lots of fireworks See in context

For people who travel outside their own country, that travel provides a view of the superficial good and bad back home.

Americans like to party. We like a day off from work. We like to celebrate all the members of our military who help democracy around the world, mostly for the good of others (though not always).

For people living in the US, the 4th of July is mostly about celebrating a fake birthday for the country by doing things with family and friends outside, on a very hot day, where we eat too much, drink lots of cold beverages, often get sunburned, stuck in traffic, and let the kids learn about fireworks safety, as they grow up.

A few years ago, my state changed their fairly restrictive fireworks laws to make it so that almost anything can be used for your personal display without risk of the fire marshal coming and writing a ticket. Firecrackers that will numb some fingers for days are sold here now - like they were when I was a kid many decades ago. It has been really hot and dry here, so fire hazards are an issue for today. My family doesn't do personal fireworks, but 1 street over, a retired Marine does a huge display every year. He still raises and lowers his American flag daily to show his personal beliefs. We don't do any flags, but a few of our neighbors do. Next door flies both a US flag and a Ukrainian flag. In theory, the Ukrainian flag is against the neighborhood rules, but I don't think anyone will complain ... ever.

BTW, the 4th of July isn't about a civil war. It is about forcing the British out of the American States. Sorta like what we all hoped Hong Kong would do and what Taiwan already did. Of course, the British had a much harder time due to logistics at that time. 6 weeks to sail across the Atlantic ocean is a long supply line to maintain.

Where I live, there is a huge 10km race, so the Ethiopians and Kenyans will be running this morning along with 50,000 others. The Peachtree Road Race is a pretty big deal. People train for this event for months. https://www.atlantatrackclub.org/news/elite-athlete-fields-set-for-55th-running-of-ajc-peachtree-road-race

Perhaps the CCP and Govt will start holding people accountable for NOT building proper drainage systems in their cities?

Ever wondered how China is able to build so many things so quickly? It is because only the parts you see are there. Behind those things, there is nothing. They are just a facade. Sewers, fire extinguishers, mandated fire hosed on every floor of a building that aren't connected to any water supply, hillside communities that aren't protected from mudslides, and all those other things that kill Chinese people.

All because the inspectors take payoffs to look the other way and there aren't annual re-inspections by a different inspector who gets a bonus for finding prior inspection flaws (and the prior inspector gets penalized).

The accused has a RIGHT to a trial by jury, but that right can be waived. The choice is that of the defendant to request. The prosecutor and court must agree.

When the defendant is a corporation and the results of the failure/malice where widely publicized, it may be best to avoid a trial by jury.

The only time a jury trial is mandated, always, is when the death penalty is possible.

I didn't look up the Federal laws about this, but web-searches to legal practice webpages support it.

Different states can have different laws and procedures, of course.

Posted in: Chinese social media companies condemn hate speech against Japanese after knife attack See in context

people reading this for the first time must surely be thinking a series of anti-Japanese stabbings have taken place all across China.

The CCP localizes all negative news stories to the point that huge flooding happening in northern China either isn't mentioned at all or gets a single 30 second snippet on the national news, even when the people impacted will spend many months cleaning up the mess from the flooding. There are more stabbings than reported. Just like there are weekly primary school attacks across China, which are never reported.

The CCP blocks as much bad news as possible. They seem to think it makes them look weak - even things that are 100% caused by nature. Sadly, much of the injuries and deaths caused by flooding in China is because they changed how water flows in a very bad way and their cities don't deal with drainage well or not at all. We've all seen the sewer access plates that are just covering a 20cm hole that doesn't have any underground sewers. As long as is looks fine on opening day, then it doesn't matter if it ever works. That seems to be typical of Chinese construction projects.

Posted in: Chinese social media companies condemn hate speech against Japanese after knife attack See in context

Every week on state run Chinese TV, there are shows and movies played that show Japanese in the most terrible ways. This is Chinese, CCP, propaganda, very clearly approved by the CCP. The CCP wants Chinese citizens to hate outsiders and have the belief that only the CCP is looking out for their best interests. "National harmony" is the code word for "hate everyone else" used by the CCP.

If the CCP really wanted to work with others, they'd allow non-propaganda movies to be shown so Chinese citizens can choose for themselves what to believe and what not to believe. The Chinese people aren't dumb. They know there is propaganda that constantly targets them, but after many decades of this stuff, even those who know can't help but have a bias against foreigners as a group, unless they've actually interacted with some or traveled outside China without a "tour group".

Posted in: US wants Boeing to plead guilty to fraud over fatal crashes, lawyers say See in context

Prosecutors in every case always want the accused to plead guilty.

Only a fool would do so in the US system of justice if the proof was extremely clear cut.

Corporate lawsuits are never that clear and if they do plead guilty, they are opening the company up to many thousands of lawsuits not just by people/families actually harmed, but all the people who safely flew later for "mental duress."

The Govt prosecutors will need to actually prove their charges and I doubt the aircraft manufacturer will seek a jury trial. Additionally, nobody will go to jail. It will just become a dollar amount on the SEC financial forms for any fines ... er ... that will be passed onto current and future customers.

I can't be the only man who's been approached by women I found undesirable.

Not everyone is looking for a random female. There is some personal choice on both sides and assuming anything else will lead to unhappiness for at least 1, if not both people.

Sometimes even people of the gender we like aren't attractive to us in a sexual way. Often, over time, they do become much more attractive if their personality and brains click with ours.

Don't get me wrong, when I was much younger, an encounter with a nearly complete stranger who I did find attractive WAS fun, but I wouldn't try to build a relationship on that 4 hours if we weren't compatible on many other levels, beyond just the physical.

White people do.not rule America ,like they use to,Anglo Saxon is an insult to lots of Americans, White people have not had rule over nothing lately,

Not directly. There are still many ingrained institutions and cultural norms that work better for "white people" in America. It isn't really about skin color. But cops still pull over non-white people for "driving while black".

White me 50+ years ago were given opportunities that others were not. Hard to invent medical devices if only a few non-white people even attend medical or engineering school. That's been changing since the 1960s. There are black astronauts. https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/african_american_astronauts_fs.pdf?emrc=6ccb2a I've meet a few and they are impressive people, regardless of skin color. All astronauts that I've met were.

The Chief NASA Administrator Charles Bolden was both an astronaut and the head of NASA for many years https://www.nasa.gov/people/the-honorable-charles-f-bolden-jr/ I met Charlie when he was an astronaut.

I look forward to the day when we don't list accomplishments based on someone's skill color or gender. Being human is sufficient.

And let's be very clear. The US withholds their best tech from partners. Who has F-22s? Nobody except America. The next generation after the F-22 will not be shared either. It is about 100x better at stealth than the F-22, which is quite awesome. The F-35, as impressive as that is becoming after so many years of problems, is working. Check out this video of Americans' on a beach getting a nice show of the F-35 capabilities.

China has many historic reasons to hate Japan and the British. I can understand them teaching their people to be cautious, but not to outright hate Japanese and British. There's a point were history needs to be put in the back of our minds and we all need to move on, judging people by their most recent actions.

Obviously, the Chinese people have decided to forget what Mao did to millions and millions of Chinese, though I still can't believe they've left his statues up. If you kill 40M-80M people, seems your name should be completely removed from history, beyond a footnote that says in a few paragraphs what he did/caused.

This woman is a credit to what we hope all Chinese have in their hearts.

Really? So the Republicans couldn't find anyone better suited under the age of 78 and the Democrats couldn't find anyone better suited under the age of 81.

How the 2 major political parties select their candidates is up to them. There's no law allowing or preventing other parties (or individuals) from doing whatever each state requires.

It is just that the amount of money required to get a candidate onto the majority of US state presidential ballots is beyond what a local mayor / businessman can pay himself.

The 2 major parties in the US have corrupted their selection systems at all levels so that they can have control over what every candidate they fund will do. Usually there are years of payoffs - sorry, campaign funding - to train the actual candidates running for any major office like Mayor or State Rep/Senator to be tied to the platforms of the national parties.

There are a few smart, youtube videos that explain the issues with democratic systems and how they usually boil down to just 2 parties, because people don't want to throw away their vote. The US wasn't always dominated by just 2 parties, but over time, that is what happens.

Trump is the largest danger to America today.

He's a convicted felon. https://apnews.com/article/trump-trial-deliberations-jury-testimony-verdict-85558c6d08efb434d05b694364470aa0 He was found guilty on ALL CHARGES, not just a few, but ALL OF THEM.

He's a known liar. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56246507 with over 30,000 verified lies.

His policies are tied to at least 40% of the American deaths from COVID. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/10/us-coronavirus-response-donald-trump-health-policy

He has proven to be a sub-human in his private statements and actions. Remember how petty he is.

He said he'd get peace with Iran, NK, and have Mexico build a wall. His recent statements show he's a Putin appeaser.

He cannot be allowed to have any power, much less hold high office.

Iran has limited choices? Compared to whom? The US? LOL

In Iran, there is a small committee who will prevent people from running.

Anyone over age 35 born in the US can run for US President. ANYONE.

It may seem like the US system is very limiting because only 2 major parties have any hope of willing, but on the ballots across the US, there will be hundreds of other people you will never hear about overseas. Plus, we can write in candidates as well. Sadly, this year, "Mickey Mouse" will probably get the 3rd most votes.

Khamenei has a difficult problem this elections. He needs, someone competent who can rally his conservative base. Economic indicators, support for the system, confidence in institutions, and all other measurable and immeasurable political values in Iran are in decline. The supreme leader is not someone who fires up the base. He needs a president who can boost morale among the hardliner youth and motivate them ideologically to beat up protesters in the streets and fight in Syria and Iraq—and elsewhere if Iran expands its direct presence.

JJE - wrong. the world expects the US to say "something" about anything in the Americas.

Morales claims to want democracy, but he has chosen his friends poorly in China and Russia.

In 2013, Bolivia ejected the humanitarian aid organization, USAID, which has 1 goal in Bolivia - to help the Bolivian Govt make the lives of average Bolivian people better.

Crime level is 34% higher in Bolivia than in the USA.

Murder rates are over 2x the rate in Bolivia than in the USA.

It is a dangerous country due to organized crime engaged in all levels of crime, but mainly govt corruption and drug trafficking. Bolivia needs better friends, since China and Russia aren't helping.
