Can't see this actually happening. It would be treated as an act of war by most countries.
OssanAmerica
Considering that these are International Waters over which China has no jurisdiction, any act of detaining foreign nationals on the grounds of "tresspassing" in the South China Sea would be nothing more than a criminal act of terrorism or an act of War. Seems pretty clear that China has no intention of easing tensions much less avoiding conflict.
bass4funk
China can try that and then watch what will happen. No country can do this.
Mr Kipling
Seems pretty clear that the US has no intention of easing tensions much less avoiding conflict.
The US is using its new corrupt Philippine vassal to stir up tension.

Americans must come to terms with the fact that America is no longer able to dominate other countries such as China Russia India. Therefore, everything falls into place. Americans must "go back to" Mexico. To your continent. we must admit that the structure of the world according to the American scenario is already a thing of the past. The time is coming when large countries will, one by one, declare their independence, their geopolitical intentions, their geographical connection to the area, and therefore any intervention of “guest countries” from other continents will be harshly suppressed by the country that has lived and conducted economic life since time immemorial. activities in your region. Colonizing countries, pack your bags and go to the station.

Can all just give a collective middle finger to China, Russia, and North Korea?
Michael Machida
America is just waiting and watching and observing China.
We all are.
However, China is doomed to historic devastation by America and All Peace Loving Countries in order to Keep The Peace For All.
China is also testing us all. Hence, the wait and watch game.
America. Our beacon Of Light.

Ha ha ha!!
China is the biggest opposer of ORDER at sea!!
WA4TKG
It’s just a matter of time now.

China has no legal claim to these waters, and no jurisdiction there, so these "rules" are utterly meaningless.
If China detains anyone that will constitute kidnapping and international terrorism, and simply confirm to all (not that it needs confirming) that China is a rogue state.
In flagrant defiance of international law.

Pro-tip: if your country calls everyone else corrupt, it's most likely corrupt.
TaiwanIsNotChina
No retreat before scummy Russia/China. Cry harder.
kibousha
You say China can't do this. Do you know they also can't enslave the Uyghurs, but they do it and the "free" countries don't care, because their corporation overlords want the cheap labors.
TaiwanIsNotChina
There is no way outsiders can prevent China from being a genocidal state but if Filipinos start disappearing, you better believe the littoral combat ships will come out.
OssanAmerica
The free nations do care but being that the Uighur Autonomous Region is not being used and traversed by the rest of the world, it's rather difficult to address it without China declaring that it's an "internal" issue. Furthermore it would be close to impossible to exert any kind of military force there without starting a war as it is landlocked.
In contrast the navies of the Allied Nations freely traverse the South China Sea in FON missions to let China know that their claim to ownership is garbage and in defiance of International Law.
So just a little thought shows that it is no comparison.
stormcrow
Wow! Such breathtaking arrogance!
The heading should read:
New China rules allow detention of foreigners wherever
Peter14
China is completely delusional making such a declaration. China is going to choose to provoke a major conflict in the Southern seas. Get ready for war.
Sam Watters
Call their bluff. The Chinese will fold the first time they are punched back.
OssanAmerica
We can't punch back tit-for-tat because nobody is claiming ownership or jurisdiction over the South China Sea, besides China. So we can't stop Chinese vessels for "tresspassing".
Perhaps all commercial vessels transiting the South China Sea will require armed naval escorts.
John
Sail the Ford right down the straight accompanied by her strike group.
Lets see how many are detained.
Garthgoyle
That really sounds like an act of war.
itsonlyrocknroll
The region, united must forcefully confront the government of china, belligerence with military force, sooner rather than later, the bully must be slapped down and sent to the back of the room.
Abe234
the Philippines Vietnam et al have basically given China free reign over the South China Sea. If possession is 9/10s of the law then I can’t help but think we allowed China to build islands, bases there. This is another area China CCP will push the limits further on each individual country as they aren’t unified. Further more as China get more influence money/ credit/ political support will become important to other countries. If they do detain someone, how will we collectively act to stop the Chinese navy effectively becoming pirates? (Albeit under the CCP). And what will they do when the carriers destroyers, get involved. We either stand up, back down, or appease.
Mr Kipling
So those Russian ships ensuring free trade and open shipping lines between Florida and Cuba are fine?
What if Chinese warships were sailing up and down the coast of California? Surely OK? Freedom, Liberty, Democracy?
theFu
Act of war or piracy to detain anyone acting legally on the high seas. This will not end well.
quercetum
You know the U.S. claims the whole northern half of the Pacific Ocean from Gawaii to the Philippines don’t you? It’s not “international waters” because the U.S. says so .
China claims the South China Seas. Strong nations like the U.S. and China can claim whatever they want.
The rest of you small potato countries can’t do anything about it, can you? What can you do?
John
No. They don’t. As you say yourself, the U.S. declares it international waters.
quercetum
Well you are correct. The U.S. just claims control over the northern half of the Pacific from Hawaii to the Philippines.
And China claims control over the South China Seas.
isabelle
Yes, as long as they're not trespassing in US waters. (And that's actual US waters, not some fantasy 9/10-dash line crap that has no basis in international law.)
The US has stated clearly that the Russian ships that recently docked in Cuba are no threat. The US didn't engage in water cannon firing, military grade laser shining, ship ramming, buzzing by fighter jets, flare firing, or aggressive calls to leave what are international waters - that is, the US acted as a responsible nation should.

quercetum
In defiance of international norms and rules, U.S. officials are laying claim to the large oceanic area in the central Pacific Ocean that is home to the compact states.
Now that they are renewing the economic provisions of the compacts of free association with Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia, U.S. officials are insisting that the compacts provide the United States with exclusive control over an area of the central Pacific Ocean that is comparable in size to the United States.
“We control essentially the northern half of the Pacific between Hawaii and Philippines,” U.S. special envoy Joseph Yun told Congress in July.
ian
They should also oppose US militarization which provokes further militarization from China.
How many new bases has the US now in the Philippines, 7?9?
ian
The previous administration there were no US bases in the Philippines
Did China attack the Philippines?
China swamped the country with aids and investment's.
quercetum
That’s what small countries do, yield and defer to superpowers. The Philippines does the same to the U.S. as do the Japan.
ian
Huh really?
Maybe take a quick look at records of Vietnam China disputes
ian
Better yet take a long look at China's dispute resolution track record
Speed
Should've never given China overseas development aid in the 80s and 90s. You just knew they were going to get stronger and start snapping at others once they could.
Gene Hennigh
It seems that China, like Russia, are itching for war. There acts are criminal and the only way to stop them is by confrontation which will lead to war. Thank god the Japanese aren't left to try to stop this. They would do a lousy job, as you know. Either another Asian country should try. If the US intervenes, we will see what a hydrogen bomb can do.
TaiwanIsNotChina
If they are in international waters, sure. We can always use practice tailing ships.
Same. I believe Desert Tortoise has said Russia used to this back when they were relevant.
TaiwanIsNotChina
And way back longer before that there were much larger US bases in the Philippines. Maybe don't bully countries and they won't arm against you.
Horrendous and goes down from there if the SCS ruling is any indication.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Probably some economic claim that is completely legal under UNCLOS.
No, it is international waters still.
Are you under the impression that the US controls the Gulf of Mexico?
Again, the US is allowed to have these agreements with its commonwealth. The countries can leave anytime.

China rules...

No, they THINK they rule.

This will be the end of the CCP, any Chinese aspiration for litoral control, anywhere. Go on, do it, detain someone...see how fast the forces of the world will strike down on you.
ian
You failed to understand as usual.
The Philippines kicked out those big US bases and as mentioned China did not invade ot attack the Philippines.
And recently, as mentioned , China was very friendly to the Philippines just before the present Philippine president Marcos sold out the Philippines to the US
ian
Horrendous?
That's a very dumb take as expected.
You obviously haven't read the track record and just reacted as a mindless fanatic would
ian
The previous administration there were no US bases in the Philippines
Did China attack the Philippines?
No.
China swamped the country with aids and investment's
When Marcos won the presidency,
he sold the Philippines again to the US, like his father did, giving the US new bases, and a lot more of it this time.
TaiwanIsNotChina
So tell us of the great Chinese diplomacy towards smaller states.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Building bases in international waters is the essence of scummy activity. Thankfully Marcos Jr. is no longer going to turn a blind eye to that.
ian
Really a shame.
The Filipinos fought long and hard to kick out the Americans but when a Marcos again was in power one of the first things he did was to undo the result of one of the biggest struggles of the Philippines.
America so loves the Marcoses and it will try its best to keep them in power.
ian
Pointless to tell anything to people who are unable to understand.
It's not that you don't want to. It's just that you're unable to.
ian
China builds on what they claim are their own.
And they built it to defend against the encroachment of a country with no compunctions about invading other countries and murdering the people. And the US do this even without the flimsiest of good reasons. Iraq is a good example. The US lied to the world to justify their invasion and murder of innocent people.
And people like you support this blindingly and wholeheartedly.
Moonraker
What's in it for a presumably intelligent person to defend China? Nobody wants to live like the Chinese, or under their control. Is hating the US a good enough reason for supporting blatant totalitarianism and lies. How about giving us an ideal that China lives up to rather than relativistic whataboutery?
TaiwanIsNotChina
Which is entirely illegal. It's like starting to build something in the public park.
The US is encroaching on the SCS? How does feeling threatened give a country the right to do illegal stuff?
It's not 2003 anymore. We're up to China's dog Russia on a war of aggression which is designed to do actual territorial theft.
ian
Entirely illegal. Can you show where you based that on? I haven't actually seen the basis for that oft repeated line
ian
I dont know why don't you tell me.
ian
What do you mean by that? It doesn't matter now?
isabelle
I believe @quercetum is talking about the arrangements under COFA, but twisting things as usual. I countered this yesterday but it seems the mods removed my post.
@quercetum's comment "U.S. officials are laying claim to the large oceanic area in the central Pacific Ocean that is home to the compact states" is false.
The COFA arrangements allow the US to operate in those states' waters, per the terms of the agreement. This is not the same as the US claiming those states' waters as its own.

They basically told China to gtfo.

Rules what? lol
Mr Goodman
But who's actually stopping China anyway ?
Seems like just a bunch of talk while China continues pushing forward
All these countries supposedly opposed to Chinese activities and yet China continues to do so.
It's a bit pathetic
theFu
Yes. China has invaded land that has been determined internationally to be part of the Philippines.
If China wants to be like the US, they can help by using their Coast Guard to render aid, and enforce freedom of navigation and prevent overfishing. Of course, China won't. Just look at what they do to the land they actually have legal claims over. There is smog throughout China in the largest cities, choking the people there with hazardous levels of air pollution. They have huge projects that work against nature and prevent safe drainage during floods. It will only get worse.
China is all about optics not truth. They claim all sorts of things, but those are just photo-opportunities, not really things that happen daily for years and lead to real changes. Until the CCP learns that you cannot safely live where your dump dangerous chemicals, the people of China will always live in peril. At almost any water tap in the USA, you can get clean, safe, drinking water. In China, even the bottled water isn't safe to drink, much less tap water. That alone screams 3rd world country. Do you know that in Costa Rica, tap water is safe to drink throughout the country? Crazy, right? A little, relatively poor country has safe tap water and the powerful Chinese do not.

Cry me a river, all the commenters here. Have you checked where is your underwear (and 90% of everything else) made recently? China? Then you're supporting this, but claiming you don't.
TaiwanIsNotChina
It's up to our governments to decide when countries are national security and worker's rights risks. Such info cannot typically be gleaned from the packaging.
Norm
Thanks for asking. My underwear was made in India. My trousers were made in Vietnam.
UChosePoorly
Mr. K - that would be (and is) perfectly legal for China, Russia, or anyone else to do, and we should encourage it, even, if only to get the best look possible at our enemies.
As long as they don't come within 12 nautical miles, all good. We aren't a bunch of PAB crybabies like China and Russia.
UChosePoorly
Ian - in democracies, the President/Prime Minister changes when the population decides so. That's how we are and what separates us from the likes of China, Russia, Syria, Iran, DPRK, and my favorite - Belarus, who has had the same dictator in power since Nirvana was touring.
UChosePoorly
This is a stunning admission by the 'Right makes might' crew. Strong nations most certainly can not claim whatever they want 1. because it is wrong, 2. because it is against the UN Charter, and 3. because smaller countries can form alliances and, in doing so, can become bigger and stronger than the larger bully nation.
UChosePoorly
err - 'Might* makes right', of course.
UChosePoorly
Our side would be the 'right makes might' crew, if you think about it.
Ricky Kaminski13
Deliberately acting belligerent yet again. The sense of entitlement and arrogance of the Chinese bullies is actually where their warped sense of pride springs from too. They simply don’t know how to act nor behave nor do they seek to be respected, believed or even trusted. The Borg mindset seems uncapable of what is quite simple for most , that is a simple sense of empathy and goodwill to thy neighbors. It’s like being possessed and very sad. How does that saying go?
” The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world that he did not exist.”
Very dramatic I know but you get to see his handywork all the time, and the genius of it is that the possessed believe themselves to be 100% in the right. Blinded by their tainted convictions and entitlement. It’s quite the phenomena!
Have a toppa week good people! It’s gunna be another scorcher! Practice being good to each other, just in case! ;p
