My wife went to see their carriages on the Mall near Buckingham Palace. She and her Japanese mates said they had a lovely view of all of them, despite Masako Sama's mask, but it was a pretty hot day for it.

Disagree with the first line of the article. "Max Verstappen doesn’t need a dominant car to stay on course for a fourth straight Formula 1 title."

Oh, yes, he does!

Posted in: China coast guard says it 'drove away' Japanese boats near disputed islands See in context

When China actively attempts to change the status quo, you can either give in, or actively defend it.

Previously, Japanese fishing boats mixed happily with Taiwanese boats fishing around there. Then, guess who came along…

China needs to take these islands as part of the encirclement of Taiwan, quite apart from their mineral and geographical territorial value. To this end the CCP has been indoctrinating Chinese young people as part of school education to believe that they belong to the CCP mainland.

Fukushima 1 (Daiichi) is the top plant.

The no. 5 & 6 reactors, as mentioned above, were not affected in the same way as the now-famous 1 to 4. Even so, no one likes the machinery to sudenly let you down. That is why they have (working?) back-up systems.

Posted in: 45% of Japanese living abroad feel lonely: gov't study See in context

Sounds as if the study was looking for people who answer polls, i.e. people who might have a tendency to loneliness anyway.

Of 1.3 million asked, 1.25 million didn't bother to answer.

Of the 55,000 people who did bother, 55% did not feel lonely.

Either this poll is close to meaningless, or the results are the opposite of what is claimed.

Strange article. Gives one reason for her disqualification at the beginning of the article, and then a completely different and more serious one towards the end.

Half of their argument above sounds as if JAT are shooting themselves in the foot. That you might lose your job is not really going to gain much sympathy. Couldn't they get someone (or even AI), to make out a better, more persuasive case.

I notice the NHK newscasters recently reading the news for 5 minutes and then handing over to AI voices. Do I detect a note of sadness in their eyes? Hidden, but yes, I think so.

China is actively bullying Japan.......... and accusing Japan of 'provocation'!

CCP is not into sharing with anyone. They tried that with the oil felds along their maritime demarcation line, but guess who was sucking it out sideways from the Japanese side?

Nice idea though.

Geopolitically, China wants to take these islands. The excuses, reasons or justifications can follow later. It's the same throughout that maritime region, and their method of establishing control is the same.

If Japan does not establish some rugged presence there, they are gone.

The Chinese governement have just announced in their May report that there are no discernable levels of strontium or cesium in the seas around China, but they continue to keep in place a ban on Japanese seafood.

What should we believe? Is it worth the risk to jack up nuclear power generation with such neighbours?

Posted in: Doctor convicted over girl's death in high-speed driving crash See in context

On the face of it, easy to judge.

A 'suspended sentence' means that he now has a prison record, a heavy burden in Japan, but he does not have to physically serve it and can be a useful doctor in the meantime. If he offends in any way for the next five years the previous lenience shown will be removed. Perhaps commentators here are thinking that he could have been more useful as a prison doctor?

Not making excuses for his driving through Fukuyama at 120 kph, but he did at least have the right of way, and the car turning right without seeing his approaching car, and without judging his speed, (don't we all check the speed of other cars?) and just being there in a light Kei car, have to be some of the contributory factors to the poor child's death. Such mitigating factors all work towards the shape of any final sentencing in Japan.

The article does not give details on factors affecting visibility, such as whether this was on a straight section of road or curved, and who was or was not wearing a seatbelt, though.

Although I believe that the science and the monitoring is being done with all due diligence, you do need to watch them like a hawk to make sure they stick to their word.

In the following wordage, two warning flags pop up, for me anyway.

The first is 'no abnormal tritium'. OK, fine, but did they check for anything else? Leaving that out reduces the effectiveness of the message for me,

The second is 'the south side of the outlet'. Which way does the current flow? If it is from south to north, then I would be more interested in their figures from the north side of the outlet pipe. Leaving this hanging in the air also undermines their message considerably. Am I being too suspicious here?

Quote from above article: "Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc released about 7,800 tons of processed water as planned in its latest round which began on May 17. No abnormal tritium levels were detected in nearby waters during the period, TEPCO said. On May 22, the utility detected 7.7 becquerels of tritium per liter from seawater collected on the south side of the outlet. "
