Again, you are surmising based on "official" information which does not reflect the fact that post-war Japan was engineered by the US to serve US interests while maintaining the appearance of an independent Japan.

Macarthur often spoke openly of post-war Japan being the greatest opportunity to engineer a country to suit one's needs.

All of the LDP are beholden to the US, and Japan invariably always falls in line with US policy, while both sides maintain the charade that the LDP does so of their own accord.

Posted in: Tokyo Olympics sullied by bid-rigging, bribery trials more than 2 years after Games See in context

Tokyo organizers say they spent $13 billion to organize the 2020 Olympics, which were delayed a year by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a government audit suggests the expenditure might have been twice that. At least 60% was public money.

Everything the LDP touches turns this color eventually, even if it initially emits a deceptive golden sheen.

And of course Abe was overseeing and hobnobbing with the involved parties the whole way through, making ridiculous statements about how great the hosting of the games was going to reflect on Japan... instead it gave everyone a whole new perspective on how things are run here, and how shamelessly they steal the people's money.

@Taiwan

That's a nice pro-communist blub you got there.

LOL

It's called scholarship, in this case written by Yumi Moon, an associate professor in the Department of History at Stanford University. She posted this piece with her sources on the Wilson Center's website https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/korean-uprisings-1946-was-us-occupation-responsible-korean-war

She might have a slightly more informed perspective than you, seeing that she has to support her statements (strictly vetted by other researchers) with verifiable facts, whereas you just spout a bunch of trite statements here (i.e. "The fact is the "revolutionary" Korea would never have been successfully crushed if it had any kind of popular backing," when we now know that US-installed president Rhee felt so threatened by the popular anti-US revolutionary sentiment that he summarily rounded up and mass executed anyone suspected of being pro-left in the Bodo League massacre, in which at least 100,000 perished; when pro-US president Lee Myung-bak came to power he ordered an immediate cessation of the investigation into how many were actually killed) and never have to answer for how your hot air schtick actually stacks up against the evidence.

Posted in: S Koreans worry about Fukushima water; more disapprove of Yoon: poll See in context

Ah yeah actually no the 1965 "agreement" is widely misunderstood, as are most things regarding the Jpn-Korea situation.

The ROK president at the time was Park Chung-hee, who signed allegiance to the Emperor with his blood and fought in the Imperial army during WWII.

Park with backing of the US (Park trained at Fort Sill in Oklahoma post WWII) took power illegally with a coup d'etat.

Yes via the 1965 "agreement" Jpn did fork over a lot of money, but somehow most of that money didn't end up in the hands of the comfort women/laborers etc. but instead ended up funding Park's projects, which Japanese officials are well aware of.

Posted in: Japan says North Korea threat more serious than ever See in context

Yea everyone knows the North just wants the choking sanctions (which are literally starving their people to death) gone, which only serve to provoke and create a volatile situation for normal citizens (while the military cliques and elite profit from arms sales and raising taxes to pay for them).

It's common sense: treat someone well and they will repay the favor. For all his faults Trump was able to broker a situation where all NK missile tests stopped in exchange for putting a halt to US war game exercises.

For long term here I am talking half a century later, North Korea will win the unification war as South Korea birth rate declining very much is the most serious one in Asia. Fewer young people but more and more old people in the south. They just have to wait the South's decimated. But they still have to own ballistic missiles ICBM and nuclear arsenals to tell America don't try to come back. The North Korea must keep up the traditional communists society and giving more birth of children, there must be a generation of North Koreans marching to the south and ruling there with their final victory!

If they are not careful they will lose more to starvation than are born.

Yes, thanks in large part to the choking sanctions which have been placed on them.

When the UN goes into a country it isn't simply to "investigate" the issue, there are a lot of other things tied to their visit, i.e. it sets a precedent to then "investigate" other countries, who may be asked to do certain things in order to "comply"

Posted in: U.S. sends another submarine to S Korea, adding to show of force against North Korea See in context

So this is part of de-escalating tensions, not escalating them.

More threat = de-escalation, yeah right.

This approach is why the North worked to acquire nukes in the first place, and why they continue to test fire missiles.

Not to mention the US has already carpet-bombed the North before and caused massive destruction and suffering.

There is no excuse for behaving like a bully, and we all know Iraq and Afghanistan are still in shambles, yet of course no one amongst the neocon crowd is courageous and honest enough to admit it.

So you honestly believe the USA press ?

When it is backed up by the rest of the free press in the world, yes.

Numerous examples where it was learned in hindsight that the US media put out false narratives that were lapped up by "the rest of the free press in the world."

The CIA admitted at a Congressional hearing that they had routinely been planting stories in the western press.

Posted in: Chinese warship passed in 'unsafe manner' near US destroyer in Taiwan Strait, military officials say See in context

Out of the same playbook as:

Since the 1991 Gulf War, the U.S. and UK had been attacked by Iraqi air defenses while enforcing Iraqi no-fly zones.[44][45] These zones, and the attacks to enforce them, were described as illegal by the former UN Secretary General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and the French foreign minister Hubert Vedrine.

in the sense that although technically the Taiwan Strait may be declared international waters, if [ U.S. and Canadian navies on Saturday were conducting a joint exercise in the strait, which separates the island of Taiwan and China ], then we have something akin to if the Chinese and Russian navies conducted military exercises off the coast of California.

@fatrainfallingintheforest

any of these factors could have triggered the overreaction, and are not known to the casual observer.

True, but so what? If you catch a shoplifter, you call the police. You don't shoot them.

I did point out that it was in fact an overreaction, a subtle yet clear indication of my opinion of the kid getting shot in the back.

That was clearly not the way to go.

However, seeing that this shop has been victimized literally numerous times in a variety of ways, it's obvious that incidents of an unfortunate manner are bound to occur. If he was able to it would have been better if the shop owner had relocated, but there again we don't know if he was mired in debt or what.

Posted in: N Korea willing to talk with Japan, but claims abduction issue resolved See in context

LegrandeToday  08:44 am JST

Can it ever really be resolved? Ask the families and loved ones of those ...

-whose family members were killed by B29 bomber planes in Japan and North Korea, not to mention those who were napalmed in North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, etc.

-whose family members were forcibly conscripted into the Japanese military during WWII

-whose family members died while being used as slave labor by the Jpn govt during WWII

-whose family members were tricked into becoming comfort women for the Jpn military

Etc. Etc.

You are citing events during wartime.

The Japanese were abducted when there was no state of war between Japan and the DPRK. The over 400 South Koreans who have been abducted were taken after 1951 when there was a Truce in place between SK and NK.

A state of war doesn't excuse the actions of Japan, the US, or anyone.

Literally zero wars at the moment and you have a high estimation of the US ability to get people to die for it. Also, it will be China that invades Taiwan unprovoked.

You are really misinformed on a while other level...not aware of US involvement in the Ukraine mess, somehow don't know about Pelosi's visit to Taiwan/US military personnel in Taiwan/massive sales of US arms to Taiwan etc.
