Missing woman rescued near Tokyo after 36 hours adrift at sea

A woman was rescued from the sea off Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, on Wednesday morning after drifting some 80 kilometers over about 36 hours, a local coast guard office said.

The 21-year-old Chinese woman, who was on a swim ring, was found dehydrated but conscious, according to the office.

She was swimming at Shirahama Ohama beach in Shizuoka Prefecture at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday with a friend during their travels, and was reported missing to police, the office said.

Yeah Herve above...the Grace of God ...and a plastic floaty ring...

Garthegoyle....yeah the "floaties "....get off the train, buy a floaty from a shop,....then leave it at the beach at days end.

At least this floaty had some utility.

I'd use the woman to promote the brand of floaty she had.

True survivor!

From Shizuoka to Tokyo on a ukiwa. That will be one heck of a story to tell the people back home.

Saved by warm seas. A lucky woman.

I would be really interested in knowing how she was found.

The photo shows her being winched up from a coastal vessel.

Talk about lucky.

Feel good story here, victim and rescuers are all heroes. All of a sudden I feel warm and fuzzy about humanity again.

I've seen this happen in Shimoda.

A person gets on one of those unicorn floaties, gets adrift because it's a normal thing for things floating. But can't get into the water to kick it back into course, or abandon it before getting into the deeper area because, they never learned how to swim before into one of those.

"One story to tell the people back home"...

Mate, she was half way there already...on the trustworthy floaty.

An oil tanker spotted “a woman in a floaty” and sent out a broadcast that was responded to by a local freight vessel (pictured).

Let this be a lesson to us all: when using a swim ring, always carry an outboard motor, just in case.

@wallace

The sea isn’t that warm.

She was extremely tenacious to last 36 hours clinging to a float.

She was very lucky. The very small swim ring usually can't be found in the very wide sea. Sailor(s) must have good watch.

.{ In another case a Chinese woman drowned at a nearby beach a few days before this.}

Here, Swimming a 7.30pm , no life guards on duty, on a floaty ring. Found 36 hours later.

She should buy a lottery ticket....and she didnt think to call out as she was drifting AWAY from the beach. ?

Stupid.

And, you know that she didn’t call out, how exactly?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Congratulations, legally she actually became the captain of her floating unicorn or whatever it was. Extremely lucky to have been spotted and rescued alive. I don't understand how people underestimate the sea like this - it's not a place for doing stupid things..

She was saved by the grace of God.

Seeing as she is Chinese: Which one?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I heard from TV news yesterday. The sea water is 20 - 24 Celsius. It seems not warm for many hours there.

Toolonggone above

"How do I know she didnt call out "?

Because I was there, at the beach, drinking beer.

Hell, I dont speak Chinese....I didnt KNOW what she was saying ....and one should never swim after drinking.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Lucky lady, glad she was saved.

Great outcome, this young woman is very lucky! Hats off to the Japan Coast Guard.

By law, all these "floaties" must have a label stating that they are "not lifesaving devices". I guess, occasionally, they can be!

Re; "the Grace of God " thingy....why would He/She allow the episode to even happen ?

To be positive....could this event be the making of a "new endurance sport "?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Would be a very scary ordeal.

Glad she is safe and sound.

I might buy one of those floaty unicorns.

Now she can celebrate two birthdays. And she should at least send a thank you card to the Coast Guard on every anniversary of the rescue.

Boy, this story just keeps on going....congrats to all posters who kept it alive.

The 21-year-old Chinese woman, who was on a swim ring,

She is lucky that that thing did not deflate.

My close friend attempted to swim from Akashi to Awaji, in Hyogo. The channel is extremely busy with ships and boats, and there are also very strong currents, which ultimately swept him away to Okayama 9 hours later.

Her friend reported her missing. Must have been a truly scary time out on the deep ocean.

Somehow, this will be blamed on the Japanese government by china…

”Wait for it”

I guess Chinese tourists really will go everywhere.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Wow that's a significant journey lucky the shark population is essentially non existent!

Probably fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the ocean!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Watch China make a movie out of this and insert sharks into the equation. Perhaps Meg 3?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Thank God, the woman is very lucky to be alive, very lucky.

Yeah Herve above...the Grace of God ...and a plastic floaty ring

Yes, both.
