30 years? Ha.

Should get life with no possibility of getting out.

I can't even fathom the mind of an individual who would strangle two children.

Good. China has been illegally fishing in Japanese waters for a long time. China has been provoking its neighbors.

Japan should be doing this more often.

They'll never be able to stop this data center from being built. They'll never stop Google and Amazon and the other tech giants.

These data centers are the future.

It's important to show elderly compassion. But really a society should show compassion to all its deserving members. There are some nasty elderly out there.

A crime is a crime. He should face the same penalty as anyone getting caught stealing a saw.

Lock him up.

I hope these two staff also lose their licenses. I hope they never work at a kindergarten again.

As part of their punishment they should be made to go around to various kindergartens throughout Japan and talk about what they did.

I remember when I was a kid the police that came to my school to warn about drugs and committing crimes had little impact. It was always the former drug addicts talking about their experiences and individuals who had been to jail that had the strongest impact.

I certainly sympathize with his reason for seeking asylum. But I don't know why he would choose Japan.

he made an application for refugee status in January 2020

He's been waiting a long time.

What about his partner? Where is his partner? Did he abandon his partner?

Posted in: Japan enacts law to restrict sex offenders from child-related work See in context

This is a good start.

If the agency confirms the jobseeker was given either a prison term for a sexual offense in the last 20 years or a fine in the past 10 years, the individual will be notified and given the option to decline the job offer.

This seems a little strange. Just notify the employer directly.

How about adding violent crime to this?

Posted in: Man arrested over deaths of ex-wife, 3 kids at Tokyo home in May See in context

For some reason it is quite common here in Japan to have a wife who belittles her husband. Many women here tend to be subservient at the workplace or in public. But at home they can be domineering.

That said, what he did is reprehensible. I can't imagine having that much anger directed at someone, especially children.

He will eventually hang. Rightfully so.

Posted in: Tokyo's Shibuya enacts ban on street drinking at night in some areas See in context

Coming from a country with prudish views on public drinking, I always marveled at the freedom Japanese people had to drink freely on the streets when I first came here. Every now and then one might have to step over a puke puddle but it was usually a welcomed freedom. It nicely countered other restrictive aspects of Japanese culture.

Japan is changing for the worst in some cases.

Begging foreigners to come here and help with the stagnate economy to only charge them more for rooms and food and sightseeing is not good.

Now no drinking on the streets. This is also slyly / subtly aimed at foreigners.

Chateraise sells ice cream for very cheap. It's probably the cheapest ice cream in Japan. But now we know why their ice cream is so cheap.

This company exploits foreign workers.

offering them 943 yen an hour

This is an unacceptable wage. No doubt they are working six days a week, eight hours a day.

It shouldn't matter if this is a considerably higher wage than what they could in earn in their home country.

They deserve more.

Posted in: Japan enacts law ensuring access to third-party apps See in context

That's absurd!

Behavior deemed anti-competitive will see operators fined 20 percent of their revenue in Japan for each offending service, rising to 30 percent if they do not stop.

What about a similar penalty to Japanese car companies that falsify data?

What about a similar penalty given to political parties that get caught taking kickbacks?

What about Aeon?

Posted in: Voter support for Kishida slips to new low, poll shows See in context

There are plenty of people in the US who despise Biden but his approval rating is much higher.

There were plenty of people in the U.S who despised Trump during his 1st presidency but his numbers were higher.

It seems Japanese people don't mind expressing their true opinion. But for some strange reason when it's time to vote they don't want change.

Posted in: Japan plans to require more firms to disclose gender pay gap data See in context

The companies should feel pressure from the government for equal pay.

Another wage gap is between full-time and contract workers. In many cases the contract worker has the same workload, works the same amount of hours, but gets paid significantly less. And usually no bonuses.

This is the result you will get when a society does what it can to stifle creativity and individuality and expect conformity.

I've heard so many times Japanese are shy.

I don't find this to be the case.

Being outspoken is not desirable in this country. Expressing your ideas is not desirable in this country.

Poor Shinjo. Sounds like a decent fellow. 60 years old so probably already retired from his job and now volunteering as a parole officer.

... sentenced Iitsuka to three years in prison, suspended for five years

This punishment seems not to be a very good idea. But it's quite common in Japan. I understand if someone gets caught steeling bread from a store. This is a case where a suspended sentence would benefit everyone.

But any crime involving threats with a weapon or violence or stalking or even death should result in some jail time.
