Police in Sapporo said Sunday they have arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting a 67-year-old woman while they were on a platform at JR Sapporo Station.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Hokkaido Broadcasting Corp reported that the suspect, a company employee from Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, is accused of punching the woman in the face with his fist.
A witness called police, while the woman's friend chased the man down an escalator and grabbed him in the underground shopping mall at Sapporo Station. Police said the man has admitted to the allegation.
According to police and JR officials, the platform at the time was crowded. A train had just arrived from New Chitose Airport, and it is believed that the man and the woman were on this train. After they got off the train, the woman was walking on the platform in front of the man and turned around to say something to him him, which is when he punched her.
Police believe there was some kind of trouble between the two, who do not know each other, prior to the incident and are investigating the details of what happened on the train.
Police said the woman was not seriously injured.

There must be something on the train that make initiate that fight.

Most likely something happened on the train before the incident.

Who knows what was said or what happened, but to punch an older woman like that seems way out of line. Walk away. Before you hit someone.

Yeah, we obviously know that something happened on the train before.

Dont ever underestimate human beings, the psycho could have had pushed that woman onto tracks in no time and thought nothing about it. Life is a bliss when you stay away from crowds of humans and all their drama.

It doesn’t matter what happened on the train. The is no excuse for punching an old lady in the face. He deserves jail time.

Yeah, a mob of angry and unhappy business people forced into cattle cars well beyond capacity so that he can get home and try to eat a little before going to bed and rushing into work to do it again tomorrow. When you have that much stress day in and out, people are bound to snap. There is no excuse for it, and the man needs to make amends and face the music, but it's easy to see why people crack. The woman probably did absolutely nothing aside from maybe walking too slowly for the man's liking, or not giving up a seat for him, etc.

I've never seen fisticuffs on trains, but I've seen a fair few kerfuffles on —I once saw two salarymen angrily yelling and tugging at each other's neckties. Another time, a woman got on in mid-summer and, in a loud voice, said, ' Mo atsui! atsui!' Another woman angrily retorted, 'Urusai ne, mina atsui yo!'. Then they started yelling at each other until the next stop.

* while the woman's friend chased the man down an escalator and grabbed him in the underground shopping mall *-Very cool she was able to get her man. What kind of a man punches a woman? She should be recognized for her bravery and helping her friend. Assault in Japan is not a joke. You are going to do time no matter what age.

No gentleman for sure, whatever she may have said.
Deserves jail time and hope it was just once in a lifetime angry inconscious reaction.

I doubt trains in Sapporo at 19:30 on Saturday are that crowded. The airport express does get a bit crowded in weekends, but there is no comparison with morning trains in Tokyo. I suspect the usual culprit, alcohol. The lady may said something, she may even initiated the fight, but punching just lands you in jail. And most probably the guy will also be fired from that company in Fujisawa, and good luck finding another job with that arrest record.

When will people learn, violence is NEVER the answer - doesn't matter what happened prior, just walk away and forget it, simple.

Something happened before.

Unless she was holding a knife to the throat of a baby, and threatening to fire a machine gun into a crowd, I can't imagine what justifies hitting a woman.
