Good for them - they get fail-safe guard against China

Posted in: 'Seven Samurai' at 70: Kurosawa's epic still moves like nothing else See in context

Kurosawa was appreciated in the West first, before he was appreciated in Japan

Kurosawa said in his autobiography that the Japanese were hesitant to appreciate anything Japanese for what it was, dismissing their own culture as unimpressive, and it wasn’t until westerners saw interest in Japanese art that the Japanese themselves were willing to appreciate it.

"How Japan's Greatest Director Was Exiled from His Country"

https://movieweb.com/akira-kurosawa-disliked-in-japan/

Despite being hailed as a genius in the West, Kurosawa faced dismissal and criticism in Japan, causing a downward spiral.

Kurosawa's films had a significant impact on international cinema, inspiring genres like spaghetti westerns and gaining recognition globally.

Kurosawa struggled to find support and funding in Japan, turning to foreign directors like Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas to produce his later films.

Posted in: China is runaway leader in generative AI patent applications followed by the US, the UN says See in context

As with other types of patent applications, WIPO officials acknowledge that the quantity of GenAI patents doesn't indicate quality. It's hard to tell so early in the technology which patents will have market value or be transformative for society.

All they do is submit patents because their pay or tenure depends on it

But they don't do anything with it. They just submit, submit, submit. It's just ink on paper

(And it's not like China respects patents anyways. Chinese people are not known for their knockoffs for nothing.)

The U.S. and China are often seen as rivals in the development of artificial intelligence, but by some measures U.S. tech companies are taking the lead in making the world’s most cutting-edge AI systems.

Sixty-one notable machine-learning models emerged from U.S.-based institutions in 2023, outpacing the European Union’s 21 and China’s 15, according to the annual AI Index from Stanford University’s Institute for Human-centered Artificial Intelligence. Of EU countries, France had the most, with eight.

By another measure, the U.S. also has the most so-called AI foundation models — such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, Anthropic’s Claude 3, Gemini and Meta’s Llama, which are huge, versatile and trained on massive datasets.

These are the ones that are actually working out in the real world

As they say in sports, the game is played on the pitch, not on paper

He was apprehended by police later that day and released on bail the following day.

See japan, ya don't have to detain a suspect for 23 days. Ya can still do the usual police work with the suspect free on bail the following day

Russia is in Syria as per request of the UN-recognized government.

Saudi Arabia is in Yemen as per request of the UN-recognized government, so the Houthis should surrender

The other invaders don't have a UN mandate. They are attempting to break up the country and shave parts of it off in collaboration with proxies. How ironic.

Russia invaded Ukraine and doesn't have an UN mandate, in order to break Ukraine up and establish proxy governments. Cue Alanis Morissette

Maybe because America backs the terrorists, and wants the far more democratic government gone.

Syrian Kurds are not even allowed to vote in the Assad government. Assad's father had disenfranchised them decades ago

More people should be speaking out against jailing of journalists like Assange and Gershkovich

Shame on Russia using the legal system as a political weapon

He engaged in what investigative journalists and reporters covering corruption-related issues do everyday. Expose government lies, fraud and deceit by reporting and publishing information in the public interest. He didn't hack into anything or encourage anyone to do so.

The Russian government has no moral and absolutely abusing laws. No one should trust that country!

Posted in: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returns to Australia a free man after U.S. legal battle ends See in context

Assange got his freedom; the US got their conviction - everybody got something. The US isn't even in Afghanistan anymore, and minimal presence in Iraq. A dozen years is enough

Australia has been pushing hard for this the last few years. The US has other enemies now, and they need Australia's help more than they need Assange. So, this was a favor to Australia in exchange for other favors

Posted in: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returns to Australia a free man after U.S. legal battle ends See in context

ASSANGE IS FREE!!!...

He is a hero who showed the world the crimes of the US in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He deserves the Nobel Prize...

US couldn't handle it...

No one can stop the truth, not even the decadent good old US..

So is Ai Weiwei, who has long advocated for the release of Assange. He's a hero who showed the world the corruption and human rights abuses endemic within the Chinese government

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_Weiwei#Support_for_Julian_Assange

Ai has long advocated for the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.[110] In 2016, he co-signed a letter which stated that the UK and Sweden were undermining the UN by ignoring the findings of a UN working group that found Assange was being arbitrarily detained. The letter called on the UK and Sweden to guarantee Assange's freedom of movement and provide compensation.[111] Ai visited Assange in high security Belmarsh Prison after his arrest by the UK.[112] In September 2019, Ai held a silent protest in support of Assange outside London's Old Bailey court where Assange's extradition hearing was being held.[110] Ai called for Assange's freedom and said "He truly represents the very core value of why we are fighting, the freedom of the press."[113]

And Ai Weiwei was suggested for the Nobel Prize, but the Chinese government couldn't handle it, so the Chinese government imprisoned him. No one can stop the truth!

The other 5 of the Big 6 Marathons already have this category with no issue

The other World Major Marathons —Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, and New York— have added the non-binary category over the past few years

If Tokyo wants to remain one of the Big 6, they all have to be on par. The category is there to stay: the men compete against other men; the women compete against other women; and the non-binary runners compete against other non-binary runners. There's no problem
