The AMA in the States previously recommended 2G per day for adults.

I was hospitalized in Japan several years ago, and asked that my meals be from their "reduced sodium" menu. The first evening, when the reduced sodium meal came, the nutrition label said it had 6G of salt . . . 3x the recommended level in the States, yet, I assume it was still several grams below the Japanese daily average, which must be crazy high.

Actually, it's called sympathy if one has never been in the same situation and experienced it themselves. Empathy is when you have the same or very similar experience as the person you share the sorrow with.

Not having been in her shoes, I can't say murder or mercy killing was/wasn't the right answer, but it seems wrong to me, given other options.

Ha! For those who think this story is about tipping . . you've missed the point. It's about philanthropy.

Tipping itself is a nasty custom; I think most would prefer to have a system of pricing built into costs and do away with tipping. Why should customers have to step in where the owner of an establishment shirks responsibility to pay a reasonable wage?

I hope tipping doesn't become a custom in Japan, where virtually all min. wage workers don't think the job at that level is a permanent career.

There is still, most unfortunately, a small number of callous, small-minded gov't employees/bureaucrats in Japan who think that non-Japanese in their custody are sub-human, not worthy of human decency and respect, when in fact, they are the ones not worth of same. Eye for an eye: they should be put in the very same detention room/cell where the young lady was held until they become sick and die. May their souls (oops...my bad. This assumes they even had souls.) rot in hell for eternity.

Ditto baktaka. Japan, by default, faults the operator of the larger/stronger vehicle. ex: truck vs car, car vs bicycle, bicycle vs pedestrian. This is wrong. Japanese justice and law enforcement need to grow up. (1) as others have posted, the driver can't control what others do, i.e., darting out in front of them, and thus, shouldn't automatically be arrested. Stupid. (2) Where does Japan get off calling drivers, because they have a license and drive over to see their aunt and uncle or go somewhere, "professional"? Geeze

Racism, in any form, is pathetic. Virtually all Americans, of any ethnicity, don't hate Asians; it's the 0.0001% that are racist, do terrible things, and grab headlines, thus inculcating the rest of us.

Though there's not much trust in gov't officials, the daily #s of covid infections is, IMO, at a crisis level in Japan and temporary draconian measures, such as a complete lockdown for 2 weeks and capacity of the shinkansen and other travel modes at 50% are needed, with significant fines. This "please don't go out and drink" and "please don't travel" don't cut it.
