Again, Japan courts hand down a ridiculously light sentence that is nowhere near commensurate with the crime committed.

I can understand people being against the death penalty. But, this piece of crap should have been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole at the very least.

But, hey, let's arrest some old man for shoplifting an onigiri.

And so the 737 woes keep coming - maybe there's just something fundamentally flawed with that particular model...?

Someone else who doesn't know the difference between a 737 and 737MAX.

At least he was honest, unlike all those who claim "I didn't know what to do with the body".

30something percent is hardly "winning".

You couldn’t pay me to get on a Boeing 737

Why? The 737 has an excellent safety record.

Oh, I get it. You don't know the difference between a 737 and 737MAX.

qazwsx

well when even Boeing employees are saying they wouldn’t put their families on those planes it makes me worried too

Can you cite the sources where you've seen them say they wouldn't fly on a 737? Seems weird, being such a historically reliable aircraft.

I've only ever seen the negative Boeing employee comments about the 787 and 737MAX, which is understandable.

Because all of their measures thus far have been too small and too short-sighted. They need long-term solutions to address income, work-life balance, cost-of-living, and daycare.

And yet they keep building more senior care facilities. I live in an area of Tokyo famous or senior care facilities. Whenever some big construction project starts nearby, that's usually the first guess as to what it will be and often correct.

In my suburban Osaka city, I drove past a huge construction site recently. I assumed it was going to be a high-rise mansion, based on the short distance from the train station. But, the sign said senior home! It's only going to be a few stories tall. But, it is massive in footprint. There are also two huge senior homes right in my immediate neighborhood.

I have a feeling the ones going under are smaller, less expensive ones. I think there's a pretty strong market for higher-end (as in expensive) facilities.

He probably died peacefully in his sleep. Otherwise, people would have seen him clutching his chest, grimacing, groaning, etc. It's just sad that it wasn't in his own bed. (Or a partner's)

One of the first things I thought of when I read this article was the famous story of Hachiko. I pictured a faithful Akita waiting for him outside the station.

What are you talking about? Look at the article. The women willingly went to HIS hotel because they knew who he was.

What are you talking about? Willingly going to the hotel room is not willingly consenting to sexual intercourse.

EDIT: Doh! I realized the second I hit "post" that in a bi-fold wallet, it's still 5x thickness, as the 10,000 was also folded in half.

Delete and Edit options are sorely needed in the JT comments sections.

"They could definitely use a ¥50,000 note."

Why there is no need. 5 x ¥10,000 does not occupy too much room in your wallet.

Simple math will tell you they take up 5 x the thickness in a flat wallet, and a whopping 10 x thickness in a bi-fold wallet, which would be quite noticeable in a pants pocket. I'd much rather carry 1 ¥50,000 and 2 or 3 ¥10,000 than 7 or 8 ¥10,000 notes in my wallet. Wouldn't you?

I can understand the discontinuance of $500, $1000, and $5000 notes in the US with the ubiquity of cashless payments. But, in a largely cash society, like Japan, paying for larger ticket items would be much easier, with less chance of error, using ¥50,000 notes.

The current denominations are correct and what we need. ¥1,000. ¥5,000. ¥10,000.

They could definitely use a ¥50,000 note.

Once had a total of 1011 yen and give the lady 5061 yen. She had to search for a calculator to know to give me 4050 yen in change.

Maybe because nobody does that. 5,011 would be the norm in that situation. 10,011, as well.

What you did was totally unnecessary, as you had the 11yen to make it 5,011 or 10,011.

You gave her an extra 50yen for no valid reason. Were you just deliberately trying to be difficult?

The Hokusai Wave is nice. As someone with poor vision, these look like they might be easier to distinguish. Coins on the other hand will remain a challenge, and so it goes.

The coins are so vastly different in appearance and feel between denominations, I can't imagine people having difficulty differentiating them. They are certainly easier to differentiate with one's eyes closed than paper currency.

Posted in: Man arrested for stealing backpack from sleeping passenger at train station admits to 100 thefts See in context

"had committed around 100 similar thefts at train stations since October last year."

That is just by one man in one area. This really speaks to the bigger problem of alcoholism and binge drinking in Japan.

I still remember my first visit to Japan back in the 80's when my Japanese host explained the train platform "vomit sinks" to me after I erroneously assumed they were for janitorial use.

Systemic acceptance of drinking behavior has led directly to the infrastructure that helps to enable it. And, Nemoto-san takes advantage of it.

As they've been talking about this for quite some time now, I hope the vending machine operators have updated their machines this time, unlike when the Y500 coins were updated last year. I had many months of coins being rejected at drink machines and parking lots after the new coins came out. So annoying.

Posted in: Former breeder arrested for killing three dogs in Saitama Prefecture See in context

Our current Golden was a former breeding dog. She was rescued from a municipal shelter where she was surrendered by the breeder when he felt she could no longer produce enough product for him, knowing full well she would be put to death if she was adopted quickly. Luckily a small rescue group got her out of their before being killed. And, we adopted her from that group.

She is the sweetest dog. We are very happy to give her the home, care, and love she never had before her life with us. It's obvious to us that she never got to be a "dog" until we took her into our home. She was just a baby machine. And, the breeder didn't even take care of his "machine" the way a legitimate business owner would take care of his machines.

These puppy mill breeders should all be arrested.
