@Ian,

Restrooms are a necessity. Onsen is not. And a passable trans woman would probably cause more trouble for everyone and turn more heads if they went into the men’s room anyway.

@Antiquesaving

That’s a slippery slope and just a what if hypothetical.

There are so many other things in this world to worry about than the off chance of a trans woman going into an onsen.

@Wallace

Those are the salaries of the dc engineers who are lucky enough to get direct employment. The vast majority of dc engineers are outsourced on a measly salary of 280,000 - 330,000 yen/ month. I should know, I’ve recruited a lot of them. But the candidates from SE Asia and the Middle East or Africa don’t really seem to mind… it gets them a foot in the door.

Posted in: Tokyo residents seek to block building of massive data center See in context

The reason they don’t want to build in the country side is because the majority of data center engineers in Japan are outsourced entry level foreign kids doing racking & stacking on less than 300,000 yen a month. They’re not going to find these people in the middle of nowhere.

Attention grabbing animals? That’s sick. It shouldn’t be a business. At least the National Zoo in DC is free for all visitors, paid with tax dollars. The Komodo islands are pretty remote. The only thing endangering these animals is Indonesia’s shameless disregard for the environment.

@SDCA

JR has been cutting back on AC for the past 13 years during the summer since 3/11. Before that the trains used to be nice and frosty during the summers. I guess, at the time. A nuclear disaster was a good excuse to cut back on unnecessary electricity. Too bad the Japanese passengers don’t complain as there hasn’t been summer electricity supply issues for over a decade now.

@Fighto

You say the same thing about every foreigner who is arrested in Japan. Tell me what country is sending their best to Japan? The majority of active military personnel in Japan are here to protect Japan because the Japanese can’t and will put their live’s in danger to do so. If that’s not the best then what is? And Japan is paying the US for the bases because they obviously want them here. Remember that.

Great, black people already get enough hate in Japan as it is. This guy’s name is Jamel. Tell me he’s not black.

It doesn’t help that most nursery “teachers” aren’t actually teachers and are in actuality Haken workers employed by outsourcing agencies who will hire anybody who will accept 180,000 yen a month no questions asked.

Japan needs an actual Walmart instead of just Walmart’s partial ownership of the Seiyu supermarkets. That might actually stir wage growth if they price everyone else out of competition like in the States.

Agree with you but I could just as well ask, where does Japan recruit their teachers, police, and SDF members from? Paedophelia is paedophilia.

See how much sympathy a father receives if he unilaterally takes his children away from an abusive wife/ mother. Sadly, in my experience, Japanese wife’s will play the victim card and all the cuts and bruises on your body mean nothing to police because they will cry self defense. And then they will try to get the foreign father arrested/ deported with BS lies. I hope all fathers in Japan will be able to have meaningful relationships with their children.

Posted in: 22-year-old woman arrested for leaving newborn baby girl to die in car in Gifu Prefecture See in context

She has 5 siblings. That means her parents had 6 children. That’s pretty rare in Japan. That seems like the perfect family to fall back on for support as they have plenty of experience with babies and probably could afford one extra, tiny, mouth to feed. Or abortion clinics are as common as dental clinics here. Christ!

Mormons… loved The Book of Mormon! But in all seriousness I’ve met a lot of former Mormons in Japan who left the church. Some pretty unbelievable stories I’ve heard.

People on here tend to say negative things about trans people. I’ve always said it’s really complicated and has nothing to do about being gay or straight. This person was male at birth, transitions to female and still ends up with a female life partner. Perfect example.

There is a much better view of Fuji at Higashi Kurume station on the Seibu Ikebukuro line. But there is a sign by the viewing spot saying something like it’s one of the best views of Fuji in Tokyo so I doubt they would allow a developer to obstruct it.

@Hawk

Exactly. Baffled is the word as the cards are universally accepted here except for the few remaining cash only shops. I think some old timers on here are thinking of “J-Debit” which was/ is something completely different and could only be used with affiliated stores and was not useful at all.

Visa, Mastercard, JCB debit are all accepted everywhere. The issuing bank doesn’t matter. Bought breakfast this morning at family mart with my visa debit issued by SMBC. Just tap or swipe like a credit card.

Posted in: Amazon Japan makes payment policy change See in context

If it’s a self service checkout there is no “debit” option. Tap the credit option then swipe or tap your debit card. Works like a charm. Also in Amazon, when it asks for credit card number put in your debit card number instead. Works the same way. I thought this was common sense?

Posted in: Amazon Japan makes payment policy change See in context

Debit cards are not common in Japan? Really? I never use cash and pay for everything with debit cards. Every place that accepts credit cards accepts debit cards. They work the same way, as far as the machine reading the IC chip is concerned

Posted in: Amazon Japan makes payment policy change See in context

@antiquesaving

I have literally spent millions of yen on Amazon over the years buying stuff on Amazon with my Prestia, SMBC, UFJ debit cards and to a lesser extent my Mizuho JCB debit card. Not sure what you’re going on about?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Posted in: Amazon Japan makes payment policy change See in context

Any bank in Japan will give foreigners a cash/ debit card and you can order anything from anywhere so long as there is money in the account. Much prefer that than credit cards in Japan because even one late payment will ruin your credit history for 5 years and make it incredibly difficult to get a housing loan from any of the major banks or creditors.

A friend of mine worked full time at a certain afterschool place advertised on this site. He gave one month notice and his last day was in mid March. He clocked in over 70 working hours for the month of March and his former company not only didn’t pay him, they sent him a bill for 20,000 yen charging him for two days he took off. I told him to complain to the labor office. But if Japanese companies do the same to Japanese staff, no wonder why nobody takes vacations.

He’s contrite and composed because he wasn’t arrested and wasn’t in police custody and probably had good advice from a lawyer before voluntarily being questioned. Being referred to prosecutors doesn’t mean they will take any action so long as there is a contrite apology.

And Japanese women want the right to keep their surname.

I’m curious how a male, regardless of sexual orientation, becomes a sole foster parent on official documents… I would assume the child is a niece or nephew of a deceased sibling because Japan makes it almost impossible for heterosexual couples to become foster parents to begin with.
