One of the greats has left us. RIP Mr. Sutherland.

Loved Donald Sutherland as Oddball in the movie Kelly's Heroes.
RIP

Fine actor. My memory of him will always be that final scene of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Great in Klute too.
A great body of work. Great career.

One of the greats. See again Don’t Look Now and Ordinary People.
RIP

Absolutely one of the best, stoic, classy, great voice, fantastic stage presence. There were very few movies that he made that were bad, the man was extremely humble, sad to hear of his passing, he was one of the greats, and traditional, not political, just focused on his art something that the Hollywood of today has lost.
RIP.
TokyoOldMan
he will be missed by all. R.I.P.
Bob Fosse
He was on a CIA watchlist during the 70’s because of his political activism. He was a very vocal supporter of Obama, and was a writer for The Huffington Post throughout the 2008 campaign.

One of my favorite actors. Thank you, Mr. Sutherland. RIP.

Very true and gave one of the most epic monologues in movie history in JFK. Amazing presence.

RIP Donald.

Great actor with real screen presence. RIP.

Iconic actor.
First saw him in Mash - a movie that truly fitted with the anti-war movement of the times.
Hard to imagine now that he and Fonda were on the FBI/CIA commie watchlist.
His effervescence off film added to his great character supporting many causes.
Labelled a Leftie by many detractors, he was just a grounded guy interested in other humans welfare.
Great career.
Gene Hennigh
The TV show MASH was one I never watched twice. Sutherland's Hawkeye was iconic. No one could do it better.
Jimizo
Forgot about Don’t Look Now.
Cheers. Definitely one to see again.

I think he got typecast. But in Ordinary people he and Mary Tyler Moore played the opposite role of what people expected. A low budget movie that was awarded with how many Oscars, four?
Many people found it compelling.
Speed
Man, he was a good guy. I'm going to miss him.
Pukey2
If I had to choose one movie, it would be Don't Look Now.
Had no idea he was Canadian because he never really sounded as if he had a strong North American accent.
bass4funk
Well, like most of Hollywood, he was a liberal, but a classic one, not a radical banshee that lost it like Bobby DeNiro or Cher, that is what was so classy about the guy, he was subtle, you don't see that type of character from Hollywood these days, very rarely.
wallace
He was up there with Jane Ford over the Vietnam War.
wallace
oops.
He was up there with Jane Fonda over the Vietnam War.
bass4funk
But he didn't do or stage a Propaganda photo stunt with the North Vietnamese the way Fonda did and destroyed her career to this day. He was a very smart and intelligent man.
Bob Fosse
Read the article Bass.
You incorrectly claimed he wasn’t political.
“Outspoken against the Vietnam War, he along with actress Jane Fonda and others founded the Free Theater Associates in 1971. Banned by the Army because of their political views, they performed in venues near military bases in Southeast Asia in 1973.”
Norm
You incorrectly claimed he wasn’t political.
I guess reading the actual JT articles is overrated and stressful. I’d better go grab that second cup of Kool-Aid
Seijosoba
"Banned by the Army because of their political views, they performed in venues near military bases in Southeast Asia in 1973."
This obituary has been doing the rounds. I don't know if "banned" is the right word. The FTA challenged the Army's monopoly on entertainment for the troops, which often involved Bob Hope's show, which supported the military's efforts. However, not being invited or booked by the Army differs from being "banned."

I did
Not in the sense of style that Jane Fonda was or the other harpies that scream and threaten to leave the country (wish they would follow up on that threat, but that's a different story) Sutherland wasn't the type that was "in your face." Classy until the end.
Then if that is the case, people don't need to read them
I would rather drink 100% Tropicana pasteurized.
Bob Fosse
Oooh, is it like ‘shadowbanning’?
So ‘subtle’ that he was followed by the CIA for years, campaigned for Obama and by his won admission chose roles based on their political connotations.
wallace
What is a "harpie?"
I guess some posters don't support the First Amendment.
piskian
Great in The Eagle Has Landed.
Granddad met him during filming, said what a decent bloke he was.
MilesTeg
Saw him in downtown Montreal having a cup of coffee. Said hello and that one of my favorite roles was Sgt Oddball. Talked for a couple minutes. Very gracious and polite. Last film I saw of his was Ad Astra where he had a secondary role yet he still managed to stand out. Had the uncanny knack of separating from other actors and it wasn't because of his height. Sad day. RIP.
MilesTeg
Destroyed her career so much that she won two Oscars and like six Golden Globes all after the incident.
Chico3
He's legend! MASH's Hawkeye made him. He'll be missed. Thank you for the memories.
1glenn
One of my favorite actors. I miss him already.
Bob Fosse
What’s wrong with leaving the country? You did it.
Are you aware Donald Sutherland was Canadian?
Bob Fosse
The US government tried to cancel Sutherland in the 1970’s because he protested the war.
You don’t like loud, in your face, shouty celebrities who demand things be cancelled, I see. Well except 45, right?
I’m not making any points for you because as usual you don’t have one or it is based on a mistaken belief about something.
bass4funk
But Sutherland wasn't going nuts like some of these celebs like DeNiro shamelessly and embarrassingly have done.
When you are trolling and being a jerk, no. How about making a sensible dialogue and having a platform without all the name-calling and hoping it will get you accepted, it just won't be in the bigger circle of things.
They are not running for office, this is why I love Morgan Freeman, a class act, like Sutherland, the guy knows not to get baited into political tribalism that the average person cares to hear
No, it's spot on as usual

I was introduced to Donald Sutherland, as a teenager raiding Dads VHS collection.
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors 1965, a gem from Director Freddie Francis

. . . I don't know how much movies change, but his portrayal of a hidden murderer in the movie, "1901" along with what appear to racial bias in later movies, . . . . made me dislike him as an actor . . . .

Absolute classic.

“Don't hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning. Think the bridge will be there and it will be there. It's a mother, beautiful bridge, and it's gonna be there. Ok?”
RIP Oddball.
bass4funk
I don't act or have a mega platform to scream about my government in the hopes of someone listening and trying to influence possible voters, that's the difference.
Yes, not that it makes any difference in Hollywood.
Bob Fosse
So to recap, Bass;
You think subtle, sensible dialogue, no name calling is good.
But outspoken, speak your mind, rub ‘em up the wrong way, shootin’ from the hip, locker room talk and nicknames are bad, especially if political.
Got it!
Strangerland
RIP to a great Canadian hero. Condolences to Kiefer.
Gene Hennigh
Sutherland was also in some TV shows in Canada and England. I don't remember the names of the shows, but only that he was really good in them. He was also in the movie "Maverick". He played a gambler in the best story arc of the show. The man could act, boy. Boy was he good.
bass4funk
Yes, they just don’t make them like that anymore. Sutherland was in a class of great actors that are slowing leaving, a class that made Hollywood great, once these legends are gone, Hollywood won’t be for the better, sadly, already the industry is struggling. The newer actors don’t even come close, not to mention their movies, nor will they be remembered like Sutherland.

bass4funk, I was fourteen when I found "Dr Terror" in my Fathers collection, a VHS copy.
I wanted to view a horror with my friends.
