@JeffLee  ...In the other, one was attacked and is now relentlessly pursuing the perpetrators, without such territorial ambitions.

Huh??!! The entire Israeli-Palestine conflict is specifically and solely about the territorial ambitions of both sides, and this has been the basis of their destructive and deadly contention for decades... if not centuries... if not millennia.

An alternate and more revolting article title:

Third day?

No, it's actually the 268th day.

This earlier than ever date of the debate, which was proposed by the Democrats, is probably for the reason so that Biden's no-longer-avoidable age issues can be shown as more than obvious, and now there is 6 more weeks remaining until the Democratic National Convention, during which time a replacement for him can be installed.

Higher than usual?

For the past 15+ years, heat waves in the summer are now normal. Summer ain't what it used to be...

Posted in: Rice price jumps at Japan supermarkets amid heat damage, tourism boom See in context

Last summer, hardly 10 months ago, the agriculture ministry was lamenting how rice consumption was decreasing again last year, just like its been doing for the past couple decades.

So they have been saying for the past several years:

"With demand for rice as staple food continuing its downward march, the ministry has been encouraging farmers to switch over to soybeans and wheat, as well as produce rice for animal feed."

Read one of the many reports about it from last summer here:

respondents aged 15 to 24

While online predators are certainly a problem for children, a whole 70% of respondents targeted in this ChildFund survey (those who are 18 - 24 years old) are not in fact children.

How is it a crime for a 23 year old to be asked to "meet in person" with someone they become acquainted with online?

Interesting to see how Japan is handling the central government's plan to get 60 million foreign tourists (about double last year's number) by 2030.

“If foreigners can’t understand the meaning of ‘Hotaru no Hikari’ then how could they possibly understand the meaning of a completely original song?”

Now, not only will foreigners not know, the Japanese customers will also be clueless with intended purpose this new song. So at least there will be no segregation of ignorance going on anymore.

Do note, this is something being done only now that Daiso founder and totally-hands-on company leader Hirotake Yano died 4 months ago.

Posted in: Locals in central Japan near Mount Fuji count on UFO craze for tourism See in context

Local residents in Yamanashi Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Fuji, are striving to make their city Kofu a tourist magnet with extraterrestrial help from an alien

Simple to do:

Step 1: Build a fake UFO Model positioned with a view of Mt Fuji behind it.

Tell Instagram.

Bring in lots of tourists.

Done.

Step 2: Complain of "over-tourism".

Build a wall blocking the view of Mt Fuji.

Tell tourists to f-off.

Done.

The biggest risk for Japan I suppose is warmer seas meaning more evaporation. Stronger typhoons, floods, landslides, etc.

Last tear, only one autumn typhoon hit mainland Japan (in early Sept), but several occurred in southern Okinawa, Philippines, Taiwan, and China. There was actually a drought in south Japan due to the lack of typhoon rain from this, even though at the same time China had some of the worst flooding in their history.

@sakurasuki

Perhaps it is worth noting how many major news websites, such as the BBC, are headlining this story as "US House passes crucial Ukrainian aid deal worth $61bn", and buried deep in the article almost at the end it mentions the $26 billion for Israel.

So at least JapanToday has the integrity to call it as it is from the get-go.

Posted in: 63 doctors, dentists sue Google for keeping reviews they say are unfair See in context

On the one hand, they may be just killing the messenger instead of simply owning up to criticism.

But on the other hand, people (and competitors) often use negative reviews as a method of spite for personal reasons outside of any business practice, and there should be a better method to address this.

And it goes the other way too, with places making fake 5 star reviews for themselves.

So its always important to check any review (be it one star or five) to see if the reviewer has any other reviews, or this is just a one-off review account.
