Man! Talk about a 'slap on the wrist' with this one. I'm surprised he wasn't sentenced to life, at least.

while Otsuki has admitted to robbing the store. Otsuki was q uoted by police as saying,"I have committed dozens of different thefts in the prefecture."

Wow! Talk about self-incrimination at its finest.

Posted in: What are some of your favorite getaway spots in Japan when you feel the need for a short holiday? See in context

I would say anywhere near the lake or around Enoshima. I like the sea while looking around the shops and cafes nearby. I also like the lakes around Mt. Fuji. There are very peaceful and I love relaxing at ryokans. I love taking the Shinkansen and kicking back from the Kansai area.

After living in Japan for almost 20 years, I still don't get the obsession for this kind of behavior, nor do I want to.

Posted in: Dodger Stadium’s exclusive Cheese & Guacamole Takoyaki coming to Japan for a very limited time See in context

Thankfully, the prices in Dodger Stadium, where a serving of six takoyaki sells for $13.99, will not be imported to Japan.

$14 for takoyaki? Man! What a ripoff!

Thank goodness it will not be imported to Japan. We already have the authentic version here.

Posted in: Dodger Stadium’s exclusive Cheese & Guacamole Takoyaki coming to Japan for a very limited time See in context

I only eat Takoyaki once a year or so, much prefer okonomiyaki myself you see. The toppings in the article seem rather queer and wouldn’t suit my palate.

I love takoyaki, but I do agree with you. That concoction does look a bit queer. The next time I'm at the stadium, I'll be sure to put the rest of the toppings, with the exception of the takoyaki sauce on the side, so I can enjoy the toppings with tortilla chips and salsa. Guacamole and cheese does not belong on takoyaki.

Singapore takes their laws seriously. No playing around with them. It's even written on your landing card. Remember back in the day with the American high school student Michael Fay, who was caned for vandalism?

The other thing to remember is since this ruling, President Biden can go after Trump since Biden is still in Office and doesn't have to leave Office. So, the ruling can go both ways.

U.S. Supreme Court rules Trump has immunity for official, not private acts

For those in the US, if Trump wins, get your passports updated. It also means a beginning of a possible dictatorship and a monarchy.

Woman arrested after entering man's apartment, thinking he was her ‘spouse’

Is that title correct? If it was the woman who entered the man's apartment, wouldn't she be the one thinking the man was her spouse, not he?

That's definitely my "go to" food when I'm in a hurry. It's great, healthy, satisfying, and easy to carry. No complaints. It also feels wholesome just enjoying it.

Posted in: Osaka Expo pavilion cost may further increase by ¥7.7 bil See in context

I knew this and it's going to continue to go up. It would have been a lot better if they used the previous Osaka venue and just updated it. It would have saved tons of yen and still made a profit. Not to mention, there's a monorail already in place that goes from Itami Airport, along with connecting with city train stations, too. It sounds like they're reinventing the wheel with a completely new venue.

Posted in: Government benefits for having children in Japan See in context

If a C-section is required, then the entire birth process is covered by health insurance and you still get the lump sum allowance. At least that used to be the case. Have things changed?

That's true. That happened with our 1st daughter.

We have 5 kids...that 15k a month pays the rent and puts food on the table to boot!

Yeah right. Where? Certainly not the Kanto and Kansai areas.

Also need to educate Japan Inc of supporting parent will benefit Japan in the long run. So far they can't understand that.

That's all good or okay in the beginning. However, wait until they're well into their elementary school years. There's Kumon and Juku, and other educational assistance, and those things are not cheap. Personally, I'm against them unless a student is well behind their peers. I reckon if most students are doing this, then that's a wake up call for the Board of Education. Students should be given a balance of school and personal time and let them be kids and play with other kids.

Big deal! There's always going to be some baises and censorships in textbooks (or other materials). If students really want to study more on a certain topic, they can research it on their own. Nowadays, there are many resources to search information, especially on the Internet.

There's a simple solution, show the diploma.

That was my thought, exactly. Show the credentials and verify the transcripts. Simple as that. That's what happened when I applied for my Master's courses.

Poor girl could have been bullied! How horrid!

She probably was. I hope they show those bully faces and face their punishments. However, I'm sure the punishment will be no where near what that poor young girl might have experience for long periods of time.

What a joke. 300000 yen! It’s a very serious crime some could kill him and the poor person could spend years in jail. It should be more than $3M. Unfortunately japanese laws are 1000 years behind the current time zone on Earth. Japanese companies and people in general so much ahead of the law at every level.

There are a lot of punishments in japan that are a slap on the wrist, compared with other country's punishments. It's even more of a joke if that diplomat doesn't pay the fine, due to diplomatic immunity.

They have my sympathies. My high school years in Florida were fun.

They have my sympathies, too. I also had fun school years in New Jersey and California. I've been teaching my kids the value of their great balance of good times and their education to build into their life time experiences. As a teacher, parent, and role model here in Japan, that picture looks stressful on many levels.

Posted in: Japan's birthrate falls to record low as number of marriages also drops See in context

In my personal experience, children are not so much of a financial burden, but being married is.

Same with my personal experience. They are investments; investments on their present and future and a family investment. Depending on the family, investments do cost financially; especially as they get older, with jukus, kumon, activities, health and welfare costs, and other costs. You are right that kids are never a burden, but growth investments require financial committments that keep increasing as inflation keeps up while salaries (and any other remunerations) mostly remains stagnant, or not keeping up with inflation.
