To Roger's point: When my mom came to visit me in Japan, she came down to breakfast from her hotel room and said that she had wanted to see what the Japanese news looked like but she'd only been able to find channels with children's shows. She said on one channel there were adults talking, but there were stuffed kitties and bunnies around the set. I quickly realized that what she'd seen WAS "the news".

Posted in: Only 10.4% want PM Kishida to continue to serve: poll See in context

Is he really doing such a terrible job? This has been the pattern for public opinions on PM's since Koizumi; they hold office a few years, then people want to get rid of them.

Perhaps there's still some 'ancestral trauma' as they say, holding on from a few centuries ago when the citizenry was stuck under the boot of a Daimyo who claimed power for life, and more recently the authoritarians who dragged the country into the Second World War.

It may be that the ability to collectively show a leader the door with no violence is still a bit of a novelty, however subconscious it may be.

There was a woman I knew of who inadvertently hid a pregnancy from everyone* (SHE didn't even know she was pregnant until the very end, supposedly). However, she was already quite obese so I can see why to wasn't easy to tell she was pregnant.

These stories in Japan happen all too frequently, and being Japan, I assume most of the women weren't obese to begin with.... so how the hell do they manage to hide it from everyone??

The obese lady had the child and is a loving mother, so the comparison stops there

Total injustice; yet another draconian measure taken by this government, bordering on fascism.

What's next, preventing people with 3+ drunk driving convictions from getting a commercial pilot's license?

I get it, there are all kinds of fetishes and most of them probably know no borders.... but how the hell are there so many men in Japan in particular with this fetish for stealing women's undies/aprons/nurse uniforms and other articles of clothing? I gave up long ago on trying to understand the sex appeal of it all, but I'm still very curious of why it's such a thing in Japan. The fact that it's common knowledge among women that you don't hang your undies up on a clothesline is quite telling in itself.

Oh no. No talks with Mother Russia? What will we ever do!

That Hokkaido claim is a load of horsecrap. The US did all the heavy lifting in the Asian theater and then before the smoke cleared after the surrender, Russia raced in there and claimed those islands like they had something to do with it. What a bunch of sneaky drunken losers.

Posted in: Japan aims to quadruple overseas market for anime, games See in context

I'm not sure where it came from, but since early winter my son's kindergarten class here in the US have been suddenly completely obsessed with Pokemon. My son now has Pokemon trading cards. Pokemon t-shirts and stuffed Pokemon toys, Pokemon books, and he likes to watch the Pokemon cartoons on Netflix. When I pick him up at school it's a sea of Pokemon shirts, and the little kids' birthday parties as of late are full of Pokemon napkins and Pokemon balloons.

Lucky for us we picked a bunch of Pokemon trading cards in Japan a few weeks ago, paying like ¥500 for 60 of them instead of paying like 5 times that much here. Plus our son now gets to be the cool kid with cards written in Japanese.

I should have gotten into the anime business, it seems pretty damn lucrative.

What a slob. You're in court. Show some courtroom decorum and wear a friggin' button-up shirt and a tie under that jacket, not your damn undershirt. You're in court on felony charges...you aren't at a cocktail party for tech entrepreneurs. Is his lawyer an idiot letting him dress like that? I realize it wasn't his sentencing today, but every impression counts leading up to it.
