I live near a school, there is a straight road where people do up to 80km/h. Not to be rude but many many people speeding here are 60+ in kei trucks and vans.

On this same road there is a crossing for school children, what about some engineering there to enforce some speed control in places like this too. Nothing would be more tragic than seeing a kid killed because of this?

There is not even a sign, let a lone an electronic flashing sign to warn people about the crossing.

Because now Koike has won, there is no chance of accusing here of being anti-democratic :)

Proof functioning democracy doesn’t really exist here. Even if there is noting “wrong” with Koike, there is no real competition at all. This is a problem anyone who care about Japan should be worried about.

This is so sad. And utterly preventable. The number of times I get asked by my kids if I can swim, and the number of kids that say they can’t, even 5th and 6th graders, beggars belief. Truly.

How are supposed to practice swimming when they (on average) only have access to a pool for 6 weeks out of 52? It’s crazy.

Posted in: Elementary school boy drowns during swimming class in western Japan See in context

The irony is, according to everyone I've spoken to, swimming is taught in Japan and most schools have pool because it teaches the kids how to be safe and to swim.

“Everyone I’ve spoken too”. I live across the road from a school and l see their “swimming classes”, sorry they’re just not on par with what is taught in more modern countries like Australia and the USA. Mostly it’s kids standing in waste deep water. Japan imo has a poor relationship with swimming. Kids can only really swim for 6 weeks of the year for lords sake look up “umi-biraki” it’s ridiculous. 35 degrees where we are, been that hot for a month. Every pool within 100kms is closed. When September comes it will be 30 and all the pools will be closed again.

Our town doesn’t even have a certified swimming instructor. Not a single one.

This incident, three girls dead in fukuoka from drowning, the quail egg choking and the kids getting stuck in the bus who died (RIP) make me afraid to send my kids to school here.

Posted in: Japan revises economic growth in first quarter downward See in context

Not enough earners in this shrinking, aging society.

Using technology and intelligence, this economy could be doing a lot better. This country seems to reward inefficiency and propping up big redundant corporations.

The aging population is an excuse. Japan still and will continue to have a massive population for a long time. Australia has a great economy right now, and has way less people. However it prides itself on innovation.

How much time is spent on trivial things in Japan like people having to tie up their cardboard waste before throwing it out, or writing their names on garbage bags, breaking up Styrofoam into small pieces for disposal in municipal waste bags? Even if it only takes 20 minutes to prepare your rubbish to throw away, that is 20 * 45 000 000 (not everyone does the rubbish) that's a huge number. Just fixing redundant systems like this would be a win and free people up to do more useful things.

I saw 6 road workers the other day measuring something, 6. How can 6 people be required to use a tape measure.

The waste station where I frequent has a women to greet you and ask you to tap a card, and then another man who takes your money, that's easily two people to do one job. Imagine being employed, sitting in an office all day, just to take someones change. Most places in the world would have contactless payments for this!!!! Cash only just to keep someone hired in a silly job.

I know these examples are trivial in some ways, but they are the problem.

Worker smarter, not harder really needs to be adopted here.

Let's stop the "aging population" excuse please.

When the US lowers rates, which it is expected to do in the near future, the value of the yen will probably rise, which could be a good deal for Japan's authorities.

I don’t think relying on another country to lower interest rates is a smart move. Maybe what you’re saying is right but the damage is being done.

Japan welcomes tourists but a lot of tourists (like these people) don't appreciate the problems they cause. This isn't a problem with Japan. It's a problem of those silly people wanting a shot of something stupid in an area not even meant for them.

I see this differently, why no one in government has worked out how to actually make this work for Japan is lame.

The whole thing is ultimately harmless. People went a photo with two cultural icons in one frame. Tourists bring money to Japan and Abenonics made Japanese a service economy yet the government doesn’t want this now ? So what do they want ?

why doing some light construction work and installing some extra bins was difficult, I don’t know. Maybe just charge a local tax or fee ?

Installing an ugly polluting barrier is just a crap outcome for everyone.

japan is the the only country in the word where I frequently am turned away from spending money, it’s a stange phenomenon.

agree, when I first moved to Japan I loved the lack of “nonsense” that seems so pervasive back home. The lack of helmet enforcement was up there as a plus to me
